Last Night's Action: The Rare Laugher
- Mets 12, Nationals 0: Any time Brian Stokes is hitting in a game he didn't start, Jerry Manuel must be either smiling or sleeping. He was smiling Wednesday as the Mets routed Jason Bergmann, who entered the game with a 4.13 ERA. After Monday's disgusting come-from-ahead loss, the Mets have bounced back with two straight impressive wins. Tuesday's was a nail-biter, but Wednesday's was anything but. Fernando Tatis, who has been cooling off slightly, hit a home run, as did Daniel Murphy. Seven people knocked in at least one run. John Maine threw five scoreless innings, but was fortunate to do so. Despite allowing only one hit, the righty, making his first start in a return from the disabled list, walked four. Oliver Perez closes out the series Thursday night.
- Twins 4, Yankees 2: Darrell Rasner made one mistake -- allowing a fourth-inning three-run home run -- but that cost him. Why? Because his offense didn't show up -- again. The Yankees put forth a non-effort against Twins starter Kevin Slowey. One of their two runs scored on a strikeout and a wild pitch. That capped a 3-7 road trip that has made the Yankees reconsider their playoff chances. More bad news? No. 4 starter Dan Giese left with an injury after pitching in relief.
