They say if you go over the falls, your chances are better than getting caught in that whirlpool. I've hiked that area and the steep grade can be tricky but the water is way trickier.

I used to hike often at the Niagara Gorge and yeah you'd want to stay out of the water especially upriver from the whirlpool. That part of the river has the most amazingly ferocious rapids and I can't imagine anyone surviving if they fell in. And like Niagara Falls, the Canadian side is the better place to hike by far.

From what I've read, when a body gets swept into that whirlpool there, it can be in there for DAYS before it finally surfaces. The currents in that whirlpool are incredibly strong...why were ten-year-old kids hiking in such a dangerous place?

edEx, from personal experience, I know that the state has pretty good immunity when it comes to accidents related to injuries and accidents that occur near and in bodies of water. :(

this is very sad. i pray for her parents. if a lawsuit comes out if this mainly for suing the parks dept... i'm not sure how i will react.
