MUSIC:After you listen to Jeff Tweedy & Co. croon at McCarren Park Pool, head over to Union Pool for an afterparty of sorts. Salt & Samovar (pictured) play at 10, followed by Phonograph at 11. Sadly, neither pool has water.

THEATER: Playwright Timothy Nolan's new play Not Dark Yet premieres tonight as part of the New York Fringe Festival, which kicked off last week with the usual crush of shows with celebrity names in the title. (Not one but two shows are trying to lure audiences by invoking the infernal presence of Britney Spears.) Nolan's play is above such gimmickry; it concerns novelist Tom Nuozzi and his "big hairy muse named Norman who's wrecking his life. Tom thinks he has harnessed Norman and his powers, but when Norman arrives in a skirt and feeds Tom's doubts about his work and his love, Tom grows distant from his work." Marital problems and a "creative menage a trois" ensue! – John Del Signore

MOVIE: Mark Wahlberg had a little brush with rock stardom when he went by the name Marky Mark, but he's had much more success with the whole acting thing. Tonight River Flicks joins the two together as they screen Rock Star, starring Mr. Wahlberg himself. The struggling musician starts out in a cover band and ends up in the band he was covering, which is probably when things go down the drain with the lady lead, Jennifer Aniston. Bonus: free popcorn!
8 p.m. // Pier 54 [14th St and Hudson River] // Free
PARTY: If your Wednesday night could use a little Friday in it, head to Santo's Party House for some late night action. James Murphy, Tim Sweeney and Pat Mahoney will be at the decks delivering beats to make you move. The place only opened in May so it still has that new club smell to it!
10 p.m. // Santo's Party House [100 Lafayette St] // $5

Tweedy (and his band Wilco) are another of those artists one is supposed to like - no matter whether they are actually likable. I have not heard one Wilco song whose melody has stayed with me. In one ear and out the other.
