Feds: Fed Ex Employee Stole, Sold Guns from Shipments

2008_08_guns.jpgWNBC reports a FedEx employee and another man are charged with violating federal firearms statutes for stealing guns from a FedEx facility and selling them out of a car. Cargo handler Patrick Dolan took 146 guns--shipped from Argentina to a NJ importer--from a conveyor belt and enlisted John Sozomenou to help him. Their plan unraveled when, per the Star-Ledger, "Jersey City residents complained to police in May that two white males were selling handguns at three different public housing complexes," so the feds set up a sting. Go concerned citizens! FedEx says Dolan was fired after his arrest in May ("It appears to be an isolated issue. We have very tight security procedures in place.") and the pair face up to 10 years in prison.

You would think that a shipment of handguns, unless they were being smuggled, would have some super security measures to prevent just such a theft. If the receiving gun shop has an obvious name (like Guns R us or Gunmart) it would be too easy. I am guessing that they use blind names and addresses. Is the ATF advised of gun shipments in or out of the country or have the gun nuts gotten control of this area as well? I'm sure there are others involved in this theft? Of this shipment, how many guns are missing? They'll probably show up later after a murder. 10 years isn't enough.

If you click on the Star-Ledger link, the FedEx spokesman talks about gun imports...

At any rate, what depresses me is that there is so much gun violence and this is how it gets started, with people stealing and selling guns.

so black people are right. The reason they are in this quagmire is cause of the white man.

i'm surprised that they only face up to 10 years in prison. that seems like an inadequate amount of time for selling 146 guns illegally.

It wasn't like they were at a gun show and didn't have their paperwork in order or something. They were selling guns at public housing complexes -- how many crimes were made possible because of this?

Only 10 years? Unbelievable.

What happened to the "no snitching" policy? That only applies to blacks who commit the crime and not whites in black nabes? You learn something new everyday.

Uggh, Gothamist really needs to get this racist bullshit off their site. Don't you guys have some kind of policy about the commenters not being racist douche-bags?

I know people have a right to free speech, but they could just as easily start their own site instead of polluting yours.

It should be ten years per firearm. That would send a clear message out to those that think selling firearms illegally is a good idea.

This happens a lot more often than you think and the usual culprit is a gun store employee or owner that files a false claim over a "missing shipment". These are tracked and ATF does catch these guys, but they still try..
