Governor Paterson Wants a Billion More in Cuts

2008_08_patersonb.jpgAfter repeated warnings about the state's economy and financial status, today Governor Paterson proposed another $1 billion in state spending cuts this year, and another $1.6 billion in cuts next year. Per The Politicker, "the cuts include $505 million to Medicaid, and $132 million that would be saved by postponing the implementation of legislators' programs" and cutting member items by 50% (for a savings of $100 million). Paterson wants to reduce the looming budget deficit and said, "I am confident that that the legislature will act given all the indications that we are headed for even greater problems than we have now.” Should be an interesting summer session!

Your post should also include the $51 million being cut from aid going to CUNY, a sum that is without question crippling to the already dire situation at the city's public institution. Much like the cuts made to the state university system, these cuts will only further widen the gap between the quality of education offered at CUNY and other, more established universities.

Maybe he should just raise taxes as well as cut spending. Grow some balls Paterson. We know you can do it.

i love how politicians break out these huge sounding numbers and people eat them up and start complaining, but come on 1 billion dollars comes to a 30 buck per person reduction in spending. Come on, there is a ton more fat than that! Keep cutting.
