I recently spent time with some kids who are in NYC school and about to enter 2nd and 3rd grade. they can't read at all. Even simple sight words, is-the-and etc.

Beyond the testable things, like math and reading, they were far less mentally and physically developed than kids of the same age I know who attend private schools and suburban school. Poor physical coordination and social skills leave them frustrated and intimidated.

Crisis

That's because they have lowered the standards for someone to graduate. Most graduates are at the 5th or 6th grade reading level and 3rd grade math level (and that's being generous).

I'm a teacher. This is not only deplorable for the obvious reason, but because of rampant grade inflation, this is even higher than it "should" be.

We need to get shitty teachers out, good teachers in (permanently), and parents to become involved in a positive way. Mocking a horrible, corrupt, complicated system is no way to fix it.

It's certainly not a good mark, but where I went to school 52% was a passing grade -- a D.
