Comedian Bernie Mac died in Chicago's Northwestern Memorial hospital this morning at the age of fifty. It was reported first by the Chicago Sun-Times after receiving a call from his publicist earlier this morning. Mac had been hospitalized earlier this week for pneumonia. Just last year, he had been talking to David Letterman on the Late Show about his hopes to retire soon, "I'm going to still do my producing, my films, but I want to enjoy my life a little bit. I missed a lot of things, you know". Mac was a road comedian for years and then built a formidable film career with memorable roles in the Ocean's Eleven series, Bad Santa, and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. Gothamist will most fondly remember being directly addressed as "America" during the regular testimonials he would give throughout the Bernie Mac Show.

In 'Booty Call' he stole every scene that he was in.
Sadder still is that it seemed like his carreer only took off much later in life. I thought his show was great and his standup was better than any of the Kings of Comedy.

I grew up in Brooklyn, and the closest I had to a Father was a Black Gentleman who cared enough about me to make me "Pick My Own Switch" when I was headed down another wrong path.
Bernie Mac (as he portrayed himself on the Bernie Mac Show) was eerily close to being the same man (without the Benjamins).
Now a Dad myself (also without the Benjamins!) in Boise, Idaho., My son and I couldn't wait to watch every show.
I can't even begin to express how sad this makes me.

This is such sad news! He really brought a unique and memorable humor to every role.
