Bay Ridge Tornado, One Year Later

kp_nyc_tornado.jpgToday Bay Ridge is exactly 365 days separated from the tornado that touched down in the neighborhood, and NY1 is reporting that the dust has settled and things are getting back to normal for the most part. The morning of August 8th one year ago, an EF-2 tornado touched down wiping out homes and automobiles with winds of up to 135 mph. One resident reflects on the damage done at the time, while another says "the story has a silver lining. The twister's damage brought the community closer together." Meanwhile, last night there was a Tornado Warning for Suffolk County, which eventually got downgraded.

This was one of the most surreal things I've ever experienced. I woke up in the middle of the night and thought, 'This is a horrible storm'. Then I went back to sleep.

I woke, up got dressed and went outside and there were trees upturned, my neighbors truck was crushed and the whole street was a complete wreck.

word. I remember this like it was yesterday. The nissan dealership look like it was hit with a bomb.

indeed... this was wild. I also woke up in the middle of the night, looked out the window, and basically had to close the curtains again because it was like a blinding light. There was a rainbow of lights (a lot of purple) and then blinding white light...

When I woke up in the morning, I also found things to be in disarray and then folks on the bus (train was out of service) were talking about a tornado that had hit. Who would think... in Bay Ridge?
