The Waterfalls ARE killing the trees at the River Café. I heard another rumor that they put chlorine in the water - chlorine and plants do not mix! Yikes!

I'm surprised it took so long for this story to come out. I was at Governors Island a few weeks ago and overhead a man telling a park official the same thing with regard to the sycamore trees there.

I am a fan of the waterfall sculptures (and agree that night time is really the right time for viewing) and I really appreciate the work supported by the Public Art Fund. But with the number of professionals involved in the planning of an environmental project of this scale, wouldn't an environmental specialist have been consulted?

It's a terrible thing that trees that have been around for more than 40 years are being killed.

They hated Christo in Paris when he wrapped the bridges too.
Of course, the wraps weren't spewing noxious spray all over the place either, and, this guy ain't Christo.

Still, the one under the Brooklyn Bridge looked pretty cool the night I went. I've got a great shot of it on my blog.

But I agree, for the most part, his other work is more redeeming.

^Amen to that. There might be a few more substances besides salt in that mist. Does anybody know? Is anybody testing this stuff?

How is it this project didn't need to file an environmental impact statement? I know I sure as heck wouldn't want to breathe the mist from those waterfalls.

I'm usually all for public art but I really can't stand the waterfalls exhibit. I dont see whats "art" about them. I believe they are coming down soon - aren't they? Hopefully.

Now a fountain coming up in the middle of the hudson- that would have been pretty cool. Fling up all those jellyfish that are invading the area.

IIRC there was a similar incident with a fountain near the United Nations back in the 70's. Saltwater sprayed all over the park there and killed the grass.
