MOVIE: The New Galapagos Art Space isn’t fully open yet, but WNYC is inviting you over tonight all the same. Come enjoy a free screening of Robert Redford’s The Candidate. They add that the event is part of the "Leonard Lopate Show, part of the Political Projections – our monthly on-air look at what we can learn from political films." Lopate will be on hand to introduce and speak about the 1973 film, which was written by Jeremy Larner--a speech-writer for Sen. Eugene McCarthy.
7 p.m. // Galapagos [16 Main St, DUMBO] // Free with RSVP (email projections (a) wnyc.org)
MUSIC: If you got shut out of the Plants and Animals/Yeasayer/the National show at Central Park tonight, we recommend listening from the outskirts of Rumsey Playfield (and you still have a chance at two tickets!). If you'd rather be up, front and center at a show however--head to Wingate Field for a free Erykah Badu concert, part of the MLK Jr. Concert series.
7:30 p.m. // Wingate Field [Winthrop St btwn Brooklyn and Kingston Ave] // Free
THEATER: In mythic figurations: a power triptych, Joseph Campbell’s ideas on the hero’s journey are playfully tweaked by three quirky characters: a washed up old hero who uses an overhead projector to natter on about the glory days, a mysterious “pencil pusher” in charge of coordinating heroic adventures, and the seductive assassin still in the game. Staged on a raised platform with lush sound design, crisp video and plenty of surprises, the hour long show is difficult to summarize but mostly enthralling. (Full review here.) – John Del Signore
8 p.m. // Ontological Theater [131 East 10th Street] // $17
COMEDY: If you like a little theater with your comedy, head over to Baby Wants Candy's show tonight. The Chicago-based theater group "has amazed audiences around the world with their signature show, a completely improvised hour-long musical...every aspect of the musical is improvised: the plot and characters, the musical accompaniment; even the song lyrics and the "choreography" are completely made up on the spot." Get there early and catch the Improvised Shakespeare Co., which is pretty self-explanatory.
9:30 p.m. // The Hudson Guild Theatre [441 W 26th St] // $10
