Multiple Suspects Sought in UWS Robberies

2008_07_rivpark.jpgThe police are looking for 10 teenagers suspected in at least six robberies in Riverside Park and on Riverside Drive. WNBC reports that two to 10 suspects, black males ranging in age from 13 to 17 years old, have been involved in each robbery. The most recent one was on Wednesday where "10 men assaulted a 28-year-old man in Riverside Park and stole his back pack," and there was another a few weeks ago where they "threw a stick in the wheel of a 26-year-old man's bicycle, causing the victim to fall off the bicycle" (then they assaulted and robbed him). Update: Via WABC 7, a list of the robberies and locations here.

1) On Saturday, 06-21-08 in Sakura Park, near Riverside Drive and West 122nd St. within the confines of the 26 precinct, a victim was approached from behind by 4 male blacks who assaulted the victim and removed his cell phone.

2) On Sunday, 07-13-08 in Riverside Park, near River Side Drive and W. 116 St. within the confines of the 26 precinct, a victim was approached by four male blacks who assaulted the victim and removed his cell phone.

3) On Sunday, 07-13-08 in Riverside Park, near Tiemann Place and Riverside Drive within the confines of the 26 precinct, a victim was riding his bicycle when the suspects threw a stick at his wheel, causing him to fall off the bicycle. The suspects then approached the victim, assaulted him, and removed his cell phone.

4) On Sunday, 07-20-08 near Riverside Drive and W. 120 St., within the confines of the 26 precinct, a victim was approached by 6 male blacks who assaulted him and removed his property.

ten men = 5 on 5 basketball. You need to check the basketball courts. Elementary my dear.

Scumbags. I grew up in Newark and had about 10 bikes stolen from me as a kid. I hope they attempt to rob the wrong guy.

#2 - how the fuck do you have ten bikes stolen from you? In this day in age with cellphones and such I don't understand how people can get still get robbed. Just cellphone camera their asses and then yell "rape!" or call the cops on your cellphone. people need classes on how to use their cellphone in a crisis or something. If enough people started using their cellphones to report crimes then this will have been a thing of the past.

Blacks commit crime? You mean all these years of Law & Order were wrong?

Babyhitler, you're an idiot who's obviously never been robbed.

You expect people who are robbing you to announce that they're going to rob you, wait for you make a phone call, and politely hang around while the cops come?

It doesn't work that way. First of all, while you're getting robbed YOU'RE IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING ROBBED. These things don't happen slowly and calmly and logically. They surprise you, sometimes hit you, and then take what they're looking for. You can fight back, but with five guys, you're looking at getting beaten. And at the end of it, they've taken your cellphone. You don't get a chance to make a phone call and wait on hold.

You know, I'm no criminologist, but if tingo was riding all ten bikes at the same time, it would have made it extremely difficult to deal with taking a cellphone movie and pictures, all while calling 911 at the same time. I've ridden two at a time, and that's difficult enough.

Did you even consider that, or do I have to explain everything around here? Even though, as I said, I'm not a criminologist. Not officially. Not yet.

this is why I have an expandable baton on my bicycle. it looks like a mini pump, though a full length pump makes a good weapon too.

Time of day of these crimes?

future murderers

@ drewo: agreed, time of day would be quite enlightening. I am in Riverside Park quite a bit, as far north as 116th, and it's always felt pretty safe.

Hope they catch the little criminals.

These animals should be put down.

#5 - I've never been robbed cause when I see a group of dudes that are young and dark I scoot to the next street because I know what'll happen if I stay on the same street. Sure, they most likely might not rob me but that one time you are wrong, it's gonna hurt. I was curiously threatened with stabbing more than anything most of the time but for those occassions I just stood my ground and said "stab me motherfucker!" with a crazed look in my face and a ready to fight look and the attacker wisely turned tail. I was also threatened with getting shot once but that's when I turned tail and ran the fuck out of there.

Chapter 1. "Stab Me, Motherfucker": A Nation At War.

@ drewo: since its summer vacation, kids are out of school with nothing to do, and the park is a natural place for a random crime. Sounds like they are not being so random though.

[7] Why am I not surprised? Somebody who's always cheering that bullets are still cheap yet claims to be a law-abiding citizen keeps a clearly illegal expandable baton with him at all times.
