Last night, a 12-year-old girl fell 15 stories (according the Post--the Daily News says it was 14 stories) down a chimney at the Westbeth Building on Bethune Street. Apparently the girl, who was on the roof alone (it's unclear what she was doing up there), managed to climb up to a two-story chimney and fell inside.
The Post reports the father yelled at the building's security, "My daughter fell down the shaft!" and the FDNY found her in the basement boiler room, "covered in soot." She had broken both legs and suffered head trauma.
A resident told the News, "The roof is never locked. Everyone can go up and do whatever they want to." The building, originally the Bell Labs Building, was converted to housing in 1969 for artists.

WHEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
holy crap - is she a cartoon character?
speedy recovery!
The father later yelled, "I'm a shite parent!"
ho ho ho!
I'm taking bets on how long it will take before the father sues for the roof not being locked even though locking a door to a roof is a fire violation. Idiot.
I'm glad the child is alive. However, she should be taken away from these idiot parents for child endangerment.
Fuck, I live in this building.
I guess I'm not having any roof parties anytime soon.
Housing for artists? That sounds like welfare for people who can't support themselves. I hope my tax dollars aren't supporting degenerate parents who neglect their children, like the one mentioned in this story.
Like a little girl Locke...
FX: you can roof parties, just don't let your kids wander around a rooftop unsupervised.
WTF? How did the kid make it two stories without the parents noticing? A two foot chimney, I can understand, but it takes time to climb two stories. Her parents should be taken to task.
At zodak: Yeah, and don't let them climb 2 story chimneys on the roof and throw themselves down them.
Another terrific comment from PMF. Kudos.
If a child is not safe with her parents, when is she safe?
what the hell were those idiot parents doing while the kid climbed 2 stories?
neither of those fools could keep ONE of the four eyes between them on their kid??
UGH! i hate people!
I read both the Daily News and Post articles that are linked here and neither of them says that the parents were on the roof with the girl. And in fact both stories quote a building employee saying that nobody knew why the girl was on the roof to begin with. Doesn't seem like the parents were there.
Ah -- sorry, my fault. I misread some information, I'm correcting it now. I don't know how her father figured out she fell down the shaft, though.
You know Jen, that's a good question. How would the father have known? Upon further review though there is nothing in the Post or News stories that says that the parents were on the roof I would think that it is quite possible that he was up there.
#15- Because that's what Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are for.
Jeez, get with the times already.
That was my thought exactly -- how the hell did the father have any idea what happened to the kid if he wasn't up there on the roof when she fell?
"Like a little girl Locke..."
dad: you can not go up on that chimney, young lady.
girl: don't tell me what i can't do!
well the girls gotta do what the girls gotta do.
"well the girls gotta do what the girls gotta do."
When I hear that I think be a hooker?
Damn Santa Claus for teaching these kids they can fall safely down chimneys... damn him!
They actually use this technique in Albania quite alot as an inexpensive way to clean out the chimney.
But of course 12 year olds are much more affordable over there.
Imagine the disappointment for those on the Westbeth waiting list when they heard there had been another "fall" only to learn later that it was a girl and not a tennant.
Oof, but true, NannyState...
