Breastfeeding Advocates Took the A Train Today

2008_07_breastfeed.jpgThe lactivists were at it again today! WNBC reports that to help kick-off World Breastfeeding Week, "breast-feeding advocates boarded an A train on Friday for a ride from the Bronx to Brooklyn to call attention to a mother's right to nurse her baby." Since breastfeeding in public has been legal for 14 years, their main goal was to get NY lawmakers "to pass legislation that would require health care providers to tell pregnant women about the benefits of breast-feeding before and after delivery." State Senator Liz Krueger was amongst the group today, and noted that the bill would in part "ban commercial interests from pressuring new mothers into using formula."

    Spiritof76 is exactly right.

People (men) who are uncomfortable seeing breastfeeding probably have no problem with big boobs in tight/lowcut shirts in public. Boobs for sex = OK. Boobs for food = ew!

  • Spirit of 76

Mothers have been breastfeeding in public for untold millennia. Only in relatively recent history do people have a problem with it in prudish Western "civilizations." Breastfeeding in public is still practiced in most parts of the world. On the other hand, eliminating in public is frowned upon in every society, so it's completely inane to make such a comparison. Besides, one is an unsanitary threat to public health. The other leaves little to no residue for you to step in and does not attract flies. I don't know which are the bigger babies, the ones feeding on the breasts or the ones who get all flustered by it.

Are suggesting breastfeeding mothers never leave the house?

If only they'd invent some technology that would allow you to get milk ahead of time and put it in some container that you could use when you need it.

Pull my finger: A baby needs to eat every 1.5 to 3 hours all day long, every day and around the clock. Are suggesting breastfeeding mothers never leave the house? Come on, man. Comparing breastfeeding to taking a shit is simply retarded.

I do agree with roe, however. Their energies could be used elsewhere. Do something that actually makes a difference, don't do it for the attention.

The writers at WNBC should look at subway map. Where exactly does the A train enter the Bronx?

  • Pull My Finger

Taking a shit is part of nature but I don't want to see people doing that in public.

These lactivist protests always strike me as full-on attention whoring. Yeah, breastfeeding is great if you can do it, etc. It's a part of life, it's not something that deserves a gold medal. It's a pity they don't spend their time protesting against real issues involving children--hunger, abuse, lack of quality education, etc.

What they should be publicizing is that going topless is legal in New York.

  • Jred

On one hand it is a beautiful thing and part of nature, but on the other hand it makes me uncomfortable.

I mean I don't know where I should be looking (but the man in me wants to see a big juicy titty)

  • StinaLES

    Bfeeding in public, that is.

  • StinaLES

I'm surprised bfeeding was illegal at all! Although, there was nothing grosser than hearing that suckling on the Metro North last week.

  • Pull My Finger

They should have done this on whip them out Wednesday.

  • Future Taliban

Just had an excellent idea to consolidate forces and achieve MAXIMUM protest impact; lactivists should join ranks with Critical Mass riders by doing TOPLESS mass bike rides thru the city.

Let's see how cops tackle those. Ah, I mean THAT.

"the benefits of breast-feeding before and after delivery."

now they want to breast-feed BEFORE delivery! jeepers, you give a mouse a cookie...

  • Future Taliban

Statistically speaking 78% of breast fed children will develop a propensity in later life towards wanting to eat their meals off a womans exposed breasts. 39% will experience PLS (puffed lip syndrome) in which their lips will swell excessively resembling Angelina Jolie on steroids. OK, on MORE steroids.

An A train from the Bronx? I think not.

*...That there are no age restrictions.

And me without my corn flakes

We can only hope Snoopy... We can only hope...

  • NannyState

Seems little different than that 'gurgling sound' I usually hear on the subway.
