Shark Sighting Closes Jones Beach Temporarily

2008_07_shark.jpgYesterday, swimmers were evacuated from waters off Jones Beach when a fisherman and a park police officer reported seeing something that looked like a shark. WCBS 2 went to the beach and captured some of the hysteria: "They told us there were sharks!" "There were like 10 whistles blowing!" A NY State Parks spokesman said the fisherman said he saw a "12- to 15-foot shark," while the park police officer in a patrol boat saw a fin next to the boat. Newsday spoke to some more blasé beachgoers, one said sharks are "as much afraid of us as we are of them."

    We need a bigger boat.

  • here's a tip to swimmers:

take your jewelry off before heading into the ocean. glimmering jewelry looks like fish scales to a shark.

if people actually knew how many sharks were in the water around them, no one would go swimming.

Why close the beach? Sharks need to eat too you know.

  • You have a better chance of receiving a beating from the NYPD for eating a dripping ice cream cone on a subway platform in Washington DC than getting attacked by a shark.

sharks are "as much afraid of us as we are of them."

...until they find out how delicious our feet are.

I think that's what they said on Shark Week.
