Robert Morgenthau Plans to be Manhattan DA Forever
Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau turned 89 years old today and shot down any rumors of retiring. He told the Daily News, "It's my intention to run," regarding the 2009 election, "I'm not announcing my candidacy today, but I intend to run." And food for thought for those thinking of running against him: Morgenthau also said, "If I broke both my legs I might not run, but if I broke one, I would run."
Morgenthau, who has been the Manhattan DA since 1974 (!) has raised over $700,000 for his reelection campaign. But a "political insider" told the News an increase in crime might make Morgenthau sit out another election, "It's unrealistic to expect him to deal with [rising crime] again. He's too old for that."
Last year, Morgenthau announced the creation of an immigrant affairs unit. He has said that Robert Chambers will remain in jail "for good," he's lobbied for the legalization of pot, and he looks hilarious in this 2005 Observer illustration. The role of Adam Schiff, the crusty DA played by Steven Hill for many seasons on Law & Order, was reportedly based on Morgenthau.
