I wonder why they didn't just fly to Salt Lake city and deal with it there. The fuel would be mostly used up, and it would be the same kind of landing experience in SLC as it would be at JFK. Right? Or were they worried that the blown-out tire did some other damage?

737's don't have fuel dumping systems. They probably had to fly around for hours, kinda like that Jetblue flight that landed in LA with a bad landing gear.

Presumably they dump fuel in the ocean, which still isn't GOOD but probably better than dumping it on people's houses.

I wonder where dumped fuel lands! In people's backyards? on other planes? maybe on all those rabbits hopping around? :) Glad they made it, of course. I bet we're going to be hearing a lot more about a lot of oldish planes with bad maintenance, now that they're all complaining about money. I think I'll be opting for the train more often.
