Waiters' Horror Stories Range from Spit to Sex

072908horror.jpgA waiter who turned his service industry lemons into publishing lemonade with his blog Waiter Rant has unmasked himself for the Post today, just in time for the release of his tell-all book. After years of anonymous venting about his miserable experiences serving swells at an unspecified restaurant in “the city's affluent suburbs,” Steve Dublanica has outed himself as the man who “prefers more elegant methods of revenge" than spitting in diners’ food – though he assures the Post this does happen often enough.

Dublanica reveals that "it's gotten to the point where I can tell how much money I'm going to make off a customer within 10 seconds of meeting them." And should he be dissatisfied with the gratuity, the waiter's wrath will get you barred from the restaurant permanently: "If you never get the table you want at your favorite restaurant . . . someone at the restaurant doesn't like you." Dublanica’s former restaurant, incidentally, has been identified by Grub Street as the Lanterna Tuscan Bistro in Nyack, New York.

And Dublanica isn’t alone in ranting to the Post today; as a companion piece the tabloid gets other anonymous servers to dish about their horror stories. These include being spit on (“I was too shocked and covered in phlegm to do anything"), being sexually harassed in the walk-in (“He actually started to unbutton his pants!”) and, in lieu of cash, being tipped with Xanax and cocaine ("They seem to think that if you're in the service industry, you're a drug addict by default!")

"They seem to think that if you're in the service industry, you're a drug addict by default!"

Well...

There once was a phrase: the customer is always right.

These waiters/actors/bloggers/poseurs should keep that in mind when they start their work day.

Obviously that server did not learn the first rule of drugs and money. If someone offers you either for free, take them -- even if you don't want them, someone you know will.

Never, ever fuck with people who handle your food.

that philosophy of "the customer is always right" is one of the reasons why we're such a fucked up society nowadays.

People think they're entitled to act like assholes, especially if they're paying money for something.

The customer is not always right. In fact, the customer is more often in the wrong. Especially when it comes to customers at restaurants.

"The customer is always right" is an outdated phrase from the early 20th century that merely means "treat the customer with respect" - it does not mean that the customer gets to be a grade-A douchebag.

i work in a decent popular restaurant in west village, make lots of lunch sandwiches etc.
a lot of bitchy staff as well as customers even i personally haven't had complaints.
when an order comes for something too annoying or specific i stick my hand down the back of my pants and dig around my anus until i find gold, then complete their order with a "special" brown sauch smeared on the bread.

interestingly though, in my yrs of doing this i have never had 1 complaint!

#4 is very wise. I remember a story from a Country Club on Long Island many moons ago.

Nasty rude member ...treated all the Dining area staff like idiots. One day he ordered a
big desert with a nice red cherry on top. The staff took the cherry to the men's room and everyone got a chance to piss on it then later watch the unsuspecting prick eat his piss covered cherry.

Uh, sidenote1, I hope you're lying...anyway, we've heard all these stories before, right? They usually come out of fast food joints and their 'victims' are often cops. What #4 said rings so true: don't disrespect your server because you're not the only person dining and they usually do their best to treat their patrons well. Why else would they be doing that job?

"when an order comes for something too annoying or specific"

Yeah that's terrible, how dare they order something "specific."

"The customer is always right" /snip/ merely means "treat the customer with respect" - it does not mean that the customer gets to be a grade-A douchebag.

No, of course not.

All this does is alienate people from eating out -- which doesn't seem to be a smart strategy in a tank-diving economy to me, Waiter Boy.

"it's gotten to the point where I can tell how much money I'm going to make off a customer within 10 seconds of meeting them."

Fuck you, you cocky asshole....you dont know shit

"Waiters' Horror Stories Range from Spit to Sex"

Ooh... just like a John Waters movie.

I was a waiter for 15 years. What I've seen some servers do to people who treat them with disrespect is very scary. If you don't like your server, ask the manager to replace him/her. Never, EVER give your server a hard time because you think your shit is ice cream. The ice cream you are served in return very well might be shit.

Lower Manhattan, I just read an old post by you about another poster's avatar. If there's an image that's offensive and you're on a PC, you can right click on it and select Filter This Image, and it's gone. :)

I'm a waitress in Vancouver. A sweet young couple I was serving began to argue. The man walked out. The woman guzzled an almost full litre of wine right out of the carafe! She got up and plopped herself down at a table where a single gentleman was eating. She wore a miniskirt and placed her anlkes spread-eagle atop his table. Everyone was horrified! I demanded she leave. She punched me in the face. Staff & patrons physically threw her out. She bolted back in 10 minutes later. I knocked her out-cold. Customer's not always right!
