Others may sit passively by while New York City loses 10 of its precious 235 Starbucks, but Andrew El-Kadi, who lives above a doomed Starbucks in Bay Ridge, is making a stand. He’s turning up the heat on Starbucks by handing out flyers and starting an online petition to keep his downstairs Starbucks open, because "when you feel strongly about something, [it] doesn't have to be limited to starving children in Africa or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” According to the Daily News, El-Kadi has 16 signatures and counting – when he hits the 100 mark, he plans to send the petition to the chain’s district manager, who will then have no choice but to submit to the will of the people! If not, El-Kadi says, "I'm screwed. I guess I will just have to walk the nine blocks to the other one, but who wants to do that before work?"

PUTZ
What a fucking asshole.
and people wonder why we're the most obese nation in the world.
Okay, your 15 minutes are up. Move along.
"... starving children in Africa or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
Yeah, to hell with those causes. We gotta go save a Starbucks!
What a waste of life
Yeah...um, did someone say 'douche'?
Let. It. Go.
How about lets have a Starbucks on every single block in NYC. What a douche.
It's especially pitiful given that there are 3 other Sbux's in Bay Ridge plus numerous mom & pop coffee shops within walking distance. Sigh.
I don't know what you guys are growsing about. This is a cuase near and dear to his heart. He's passionate about it. Like you fucks give a shit about little african kids with flies on their faces. You just say you do to make yourself feel like you have compassion and a human being but what do you do? give ten bucks during a telethon and pat yourself on the back thinking you made a difference? At least this dude is actually doing something.
I second Babyhitler on this one. So what if this guy is gathering a petition in what is most likely a vain attempt to save his favorite Starbucks location?
What about that makes him an asshole or a douche?
Text 1 for 'giant douche' and 2 for 'turd sandwich'.
I'm starting a petition about the Duane Reade on my block. It's like...a block until the next drugstore. And I need some Brown Betty.
wow, babyshitler messed up your heads. the real story is that there is no story.
Well if he wants to save a coffee shop that charges ridiculous amounts for wack tasting coffee then he can be my guest.
Let him walk his ass 9 blocks. Perhaps the walk will burn some of the calories he will ingest from Starbuck's fattening coffee.
Hey even I would rather live above a Starbucks than a 99 cent store or a nail salon. The kids got a point.
Amazing these idiots who are *fighting* for this business that couldn't give a fuck about you, or your community, or your quality of life. All they care about are your dollars. So sorry, buddy, apparently you do not have enough enough of them to keep your over-priced coffee around.
For what it's worth, I think the problem behind the problem is not that the guy really needs his Starbucks fix and needs it to be right there. The issue is that Starbucks is a magnet for other retail, keeps an area safer by having a presence late at night, and doesn't make a lot of noise like another prospective renter in that space (a restaurant or a bar) might make. The guy is acting out of self-interest, still, but I don't think it's the self-interest that we're seeing on the face of it.
Lazy bastard
He doesn't have a coffeemaker?
"I'm screwed. I guess I will just have to walk the nine blocks to the other one, but who wants to do that before work?" LOL. At least dude is honest about how lazy he is. It's funny how this even became a story...
#20 - last time I checked the lazy bastard handbook it says that actually going around and petitioning people and canvassing took a lot of work.
I didn't expect such negative comments. I'm with babyhitler on this one.
Sure, it's not a big news story, but it's sort of fun.
Good luck to Mr. El-Khadi
#23 - he has 16 signatures! You could do that without even moving!
#25- He still had to get up off the bed and walk downstairs.
Things you don't do as per the Lazy Bastard Handbook.
Can we lock this kid up for "delusional optimism"?
Hey people... the post is coincidentally about me.
Just to clarify some things:
1) I was misquoted regarding African children - but hey we're all human.
2) I'm actually quite involved in other causes I believe in, and this just happens to be one of those causes that is a bit of fun (on the lighter side)
3) This Starbucks is known as the nicest in Bay Ridge, the cleanest, and their staff is great. I'd hate to see them lose their jobs (the part-timers at least).
4) Babyhitler - thanks for your comments. I agree, most people just want to bash anyone who does ANYTHING related to what they passionate about.
5) Our other local shop, which is within a 2 block radius I will say... has higher prices and has 0% fairtrade coffee, as opposed to Starbucks' presumed 12-15% (I think that's the last number I heard?)
6) YES, part of it IS selfish. I'm 1 ave from the train and this Starbucks is on my way. Thanks! lol
7) Correction to my name - El-Kadi not El-Khadi
ENJOY! If anyone has other questions, post em here, I'd be happy to respond or email me through the petition which is at www.StarbucksOn3rd.info.
Lighten up folks, I'm not spending 8 hours a day workin' on this. It's just 15 minutes out of my day daily, and there are plenty of other social issues that get far more. So let's not play soapbox here ok?

Andrew
Oh I should also note, I do NOT live above this store, I live nearby. And yes, walking 9 blocks for my coffee as I rush to work doesn't quite cut it.
Whoever said I was being honest about being lazy - you're damn skippy. It's on my way, it's convenient. 'Nuff said.
I actually think this is the best thing this guy could be doing with his time. You don't want people this stupid involved in real issues. Let him fight futiley for this, fail, become disenchanted, and go back to doing nothing.
Better than him getting the activist bug and imposing his stupid ideas on the rest of his community.
16 signatures? I am relived to know that people who like Starbucks aren't just stupid, they're also completely fucking ineffective.
My only fear is that the 5 Starbucks in my immediate vicinity will draw this moth like a flame...
#26 - ......walk downstairs to lie down on the couch in starbucks whilst asking the 15 employees to pass his clipboard around and sign it. Believe me i've read the lazy bastard handbook.
Good luck Andrew
Hey guys, also just to clarify... employees aren't involved at all. I say that because it's important that's clear - otherwise I'm sure their jobs wouldn't be secured at all (regardless of store closing).
What I initially did was just leave fliers around the neighborhood and I also knew a few folks who went to the store. Surprisingly, there are a good number of people who really like the store.
Qraymond - nice comment. Really witty, you must feel proud of yourself. lol
#13 & #30, Bravo, well done both of you!
Andrew you sir are still a putz, and hopefully that latte contains the necessary antibodies to sterilize you; lest you poison the rest of the gene pool.
I don't know who can still afford a latte, but I certainly can't. At 4 bucks a pop, and with our LOCAL shop across the street at $7 a pop... I would never pay for a latte. Again, they decided to call me "Latte-lovin". In reality, I never pay more than $2.50 for a giant coffee at Starbucks.
Meanwhile, jenspellnogood - congratulations on finding yourself reading the paper and judging people you don't know. Grow up.
I'll sign a petition for them to close Starbucks, but not to keep any open.
I feel bad for this guy...
Most people are worried about gas prices, declining home values, loosing their jobs, the U.S. loosing its ass in Iraq...But all of these issues are trivial compared to the closing of a nearby starbucks.
Lol - comparing his passion for this cause to famine in Africa and the middle east conflict...
Fuckin jerkoff...
I'm circulating a petition to keep IKEA in Red Hook. Anyone care to sign?
he's probably gay.
shit laker, shut the fuck up already and go back to playing halo. your 15 seconds are OVER!
au contraire, you're so fuckin transparent a 3 year old knows all about you.
you guys should all watch that speech by Richard Burton at the beginning of Equus about passion. Clearly, Starbucks is Andrew El-Kadi's Horse God.
lol... I love all of the arrogant comments rambling on about the war in Iraq, economic issues, etc...
I guess if I'm not some materialistic shithead, but I buy Starbucks every day, that puts you all in a position to judge me.
I'm not going to comment on my activism... but I will say that the majority of our population sits around and does nothing but comments on these things (everything from my petition to the war in Iraq), as is obviously the case here, in the news, and in other media.
I choose to do something. Not only to keep my local S'bux open, but to deal with the war, corrupt politicians who lack accountability, environmental sustainability (which I admittedly am not some expert on), and a variety of other issues.
It's more likely those who stand around and speculate that have tons more to say I guess. I question anyone who thinks they're so much better than another individual so as to say the kind of rambling crap said about me here.
Sidenote: I do think it's sad that this made front page Brooklyn News. I'm sure there are plenty of other much more worthy stories. Shalom.
What a douche. Find some other place to buy coffee, dude.
okay this actually makes me really angry -- the stupid starbucks they are closing is LITERALLY across the street from a wonderful independent coffee shop called Caffe Cafe !! This place is sooo cute with a great selection ranging from your usual house blend to Jamaican Blue Mountain & a huge assortment of blended teas!! The staff is lovely, the atmosphere is not some faux mahogany nightmare & I for one am ecstatic that lame-o Sbux is closing! I was concerned it was going to affect Caffe Cafe & I'm glad that it obviously did not!
The ironic thing is that Sbux cannot have been around for more than a year, it's brand spanking new! What a loooser!!
*effect -- sorry about that, i still haven't learned that one
I always liked Chock Full o' Nuts better. It seemed more descriptive.
I'm glad to read that other people think Starbucks doesn't taste so great. I have a certain set of friends who are always wanting to meet up there and I'm thinking it can't be for the coffee... :p
Chock Full O Nuts is classic good coffee. Starbucks blows.
the guy should just buy a grinder and french press and brew his own damn coffee. he'd save more money in the long run and his coffee would taste a million times better than the shit at starbucks.
LAZY - I SAY. I gave this dude a French press coffee maker for Christmas.
He does jones for the Starbucks.
To all the haters jumping on the bandwagon: you need to get a life, get screwed, or just do whatever else it takes. I don't go to Starbucks very often, but I'd rather see a Starbucks in Bay Ridge than another dive bar or a 99 cent store. I have yet to hear about a fistfight breaking out in a Starbucks, plus they don't stack their goods in a messy pile in front of the store.
For the record, the "basic" cup of Starbucks coffee is priced close to the price of any cup of diner coffee; however Starbucks is definitely better.
Good luck to you, Andrew.
folks, he has less than 40 signatures as of this morning.
this ain't news...
If he's gay ziggy ziggy, perhaps you should ask him out, you low-life, narrow-minded asshole!!! Why don't you stick your head up your ass and roll yourself to Dunkin' Donuts!!!
OK, aside from the merits and detractions of Starbucks, petitioning a chain business to stay open doesn't make any logical sense. Why was this location chosen to close? Numbers. They don't sell enough coffee. Apparently this is one of the least profitable branches in the whole freakin' city - at the bottom of a list of 235 locations.
Getting a few hundred people to sign a petition says what exactly? "Hi Starbucks. We're sorry we haven't bought enough coffee. We really like you, though. We'll totally buy more coffee in the future! Really!" If I were a business owner, I wouldn't believe that for a second.
