At 11:42 a.m. PST, a "moderate" earthquake, measuring 5.4, struck Southern California in the Chino Hills area. Chino Hills is 29 miles southeast of downtown LA. There have been a number of aftershocks, and so far, some damage to homes near the epicenter, but no immediate damage within LA. The NYC Office of Emergency Management says earthquakes are "uncommon in NYC, [but] tremors occasionally occur." Here's a list of the biggest earthquakes in the NYC area--the most recent were 2.6 magnitude tremors felt on the UWS of Manhattan and in Queens.

an LA facebook friend updated her status almost immediately afterwards, so I quickly went to LA-ist which is GREAT, by the way, totally bypassing conventional new agencies.
My friend in LA texted me about it and said it was scary, but he's from Philly and not used to that sort of thing.
I remember the one from 2001. Scared the shit out of me. I was asleep at the time, woke me up, but I remember thinking that the house was being electrocuted. The cats were scared to death as well.
Umm, that "2.6 magnitude tremor" was the collapsing of the WTC on 9/11.
Boy, do I have egg on my face. I remembered that second quake in '01 as soon as I hit "Post."
D'oh.
But the WTC collapsing actually set off seismometers in the NYC area, too. But I think the magnitude was sub-2.
Must be Mother Gaia's warning against exploration for natural gas & oil. Drill & die!!!
