Bloomberg Talks National Politics, Last Meal

2008_07_bloombminn.jpgMayor Bloomberg kept himself in the middle of national political scene by speaking at an Independent Party fund raising breakfast in Minnesota. While he was expected to tout John McCain a little, Bloomberg had spent equal time praising both McCain and Barack Obama to the Independents, noting the candidates' willingness to buck party lines.

Once considered to be on the short list as a potential running mate for both candidates, the mayor has refused to officially support either thus far. Yesterday, he didn't make it sound like an endorsement is coming anytime soon, "I may not make it any time sooner than walking into the polling booth. I may not tell anybody other than that machine."

Bloomberg also criticized the primary system, saying NYC residents should stop paying for primaries that only help the two major parties, pointing out taxpayers shell out $10 million for primaries when 700,000 voters can't participate since they aren't registered with either party. Of course, one those unaffiliated voters this year was Bloomberg himself, due to his relatively new status as an independent.

One endorsement the mayor did make: what he'd like for his last meal, saying, "I always said if I had one breakfast to eat before I die, it would be Wonder Bread toasted, with Skippy Super Chunky melted on it, slices of overripe banana and fresh crisp bacon."

I agree with Bloomy about the NYS primary system. The comment about the last breakfast makes believe he is an Elvis aficionado.

In NYS and NYC we also need to vote on more referendums instead of leaving the decisions up to our legislatures.

I hope some diner offers that breakfast as the Bloomberg special!

sounds like depression era slop.

"700,000 voters can't participate since they aren't registered with either party." Bloomberg states

They have no one to blame but themselves.

Registering as an "Independent" does not make one independent. It only disenfranchises oneself.

I guess he still owes a favor to Leonara Fulani of the not-so-Independence Party, the nutjob who helped get him elected mayor the first time and as a pay-back Bloomberg held a charter revision Referendum on the issue of party primaries.

He put to the voters whether to eliminate party primaries, who resoundingly defeated it.

The people have spoken, Mike.

Time to move on.

I'm an Independent voter. Why? Because the Republicans and Democrats suck balls. And other political parties need to get there act together winning local elections. Bi-partisan politics only maintains the status quo. I've always believed in decreasing legislative voting power from our representatives and placing more power in the voters hands. I really don't feel disenfranchised because I'm an Independent. I feel like I'm working towards change in the USA.

There are those times when you absolutely love this guy.

And Jen, that "Bloomberg Special" should be off-menu at Cipriani's.

just like how white people don't want you looking in their shopping cart they don't want you to know who they're going to vote for, so they register themselves in these fringe parties like the Independent or the Libertarian.
tough titties.
and mayor, I have those items in my kitchen, I would love to make you your last sandwich.

Well, its an interesting discussion i have found on this site and i would like to say something about the same that Registering as an "Independent" does not make one independent. It only disenfranchises oneself.

I have a picture of Bloomberg in an Elvis costume. It is my retirement money.

No, not really. I can't back that.

I highly recommend the "Bloomburga" sandwich from Sunny and Annie's Deli (6th & Ave. B).
