Bay Ridge Brothers Defend Bodega with Machetes

2008_07_machown.jpgTwo bodega owners in Bay Ridge fought off a robbery earlier this week by taking justice into their own hands...with machetes. The Post reports that when three thieves tried to rob the S & J Meat Market Monday of $2,000 in cigarettes, brothers and co-owners Mohammed and Sammy Othman confronted them with foot-and-a-half-long machetes. "My knife's bigger than yours!" Sammy yelled at one of the robbers who had pulled a four-inch blade. After containing two of the thieves with the machete, Mohammed was able to lead police to the third by answering the suspect's cell phone, which was left behind at the bodega. He answered pretending to be one of the perp's cohorts and asked where he was. The suspect told him and was quickly apprehended by police.

Not smart to publicize it and boast about it, guys. The next robbers may read the article and come better prepared. You'll find out the meaning of the old saying, "Never bring a knife to a gunfight."

I see you've played knifey spoony before!

Why do I think this is all part of a campaign for a Crocodile Dundee remake?

these goddamn white criminal savages. Always trying to rob people.

#[1] - What makes you think the two bodega owners also won't be better prepared if there is a next time?

Are those bodega owners Trinitarios too?

Who robs a store with a four-inch knife? Doy.

They should really start taking credit cards...

what the f is with all the machetes?!!

never bring a knife to a gun fight

[5] Because if the brothers were going to have guns, they would have them already instead of machetes. Look at the picture. They think machetes make them look manly. Too bad many criminals out there aren't impressed.

#11 "Too bad many criminals out there aren't impressed." Sez who? Did you take a survey?

Just knowing that a shopkeeper will fight back is enough of a deterrent for most thieves. They'll just move on to rob some place that's an easier mark.

The Post write-up is pretty entertaining.

hello , this is mohammed othman im one of the owner of s&J meat market not bodega..what we did was a statement, that we will stand agianst robbers.. there have been too many robberies in bayridge and nobody was ever cought , because most good areas like bayridge brooklyn shop owners are not prepared...but those 3 guys that are now in jail was wrong and i hope this shows others that would try robbing other store that they can get cought, cuz we will not give up with out a fight..most people have ask us what if they had a gun, well once we cought the guys in the store they started to run for the door, that gave us the hint that they didnt have a gun..if they pull out a gun i woulnt have a choice but too give it up its not worth my life ,brothers life and the customers life..but we did was taking a stand against crime..and not to look "manly"....thank you..
