Advertisers Drop Michael Savage Radio Show Over Autism Remarks

2008_07_savage.jpgA week after conservative radio host Michael Savage made controversial remarks suggesting a child with autism was really "a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out," advertisers and some radio stations are distancing themselves from his show. According to Newsday, "Radio Shack, Aflac and Sears say that their advertisements should not have appeared during Savage's show and will not for the foreseeable future," while Anheuser-Busch explained "it has never advertised on Savage's program." And Mississippi network of radio stations SuperTalk dropped the program, with its president explaining, "We're a conservative network. I just didn't see why a person with so much hatred had a place in our network."

What did you expect? These days conservative = hatred. If normal people had figured that out before now the crazies would have done less damage. Did you miss what the neocons and religious right has done in the last 8 years? Just count the bodies.

While the neo-cons and the religious right have certainly attempted to slow America's social progress over the last decade or so, to say that conservatism = hatred is a bit of a stretch and simply adds to the partisan politics that is sucking the democracy out of this country.

Conservatism used to be a respectable word for people, but demogogic figures like Bill O'Reilly, Lou Dobbs, most televangelists, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter (the list goes on) saw that they could make a quick buck by taking it to an extreme. They consider themselves the voices and faces of conservatism, when in reality they are extreme examples of conservatism gone wrong.

Just like Bob Grant eventually sunk by his own loud mouth . Good riddance

Savage the savage savagely savaged.

Kane, I agree with you. In my opinion, the McCain candidacy is a testament to the sad state of Conservatism and conservative thought in this country today.

It's good to hear that his advertisers are paying attention to these antics and walking away. My worry is that other, less caring advertisers will quickly fill the void because this wretch still delivers the numbers. Wanna be a millionaire? Just get on the radio and rile up the crackers for an hour.

What passes for "conservatism" today usually does equal ignorance and hate, but to call it conservatism is not really correct.
Conservatism used to equal fiscal responsibility, respect of the constitution and division of powers, and respect of state's rights. In the last 8 years, the Republican party has basically supported the polar opposite: absurd deficit spending, lack of any fiscal responsiblity or sense, trampling of state rights, blatant violations of the Constiution regarding domestic spying and separation of powers, corruption of formerly independent government agencies by Republican flunkies in order to push administration views (e.g. Dept of Commerce and NOAA, The Justice Department, The EPA, etc...). Really, the violations of the last 8 years far surpass anything during the Nixon years.

conservative = hatred???

Bull. The problem is that some of you people forget that "the savage nation" is there for entertainment purposes. Anyone stupid enough to take everything said on that show as gospel does not deserve to own a TV, radio, or internet connection.

The left has for years told the conservatives to change the television channel if they do not like what they hear. I think it is about time the left takes their own advice.

The biggest crime would be to take away DR. Savage's freedom of speech. I do not care if he is talking black lesbian nuns shooting up drugs...the content is irrelevant. The show starts off with a warning that the topics in the show are ONE MAN'S OPINION on CONTROVERSIAL ADULT TOPICS.

What don't you get?

Elvis, no one is saying take his right to freedom of speech away. The same right of speech given to Savage gives us a right to challenge his words.

Taking Savage off of the air would not be taking his freedom of speech away; he is more than welcome to spout his opinions elsewhere. What it would do is reflect the market - as advertisers take away funding because by giving the stations who host him money to air their products during his show, they are implicitly supporting him. In a free-market system, which the US purports to be running, advertisers can choose whose shows they want to pay money to and whose shows they want nothing to do with. I think a "conservative" like Savage can appreciate unadulterated capitalism like that.

I agree with most you are saying. I didn't say people were taking away his freedom of speech. I simply said it would be the biggest crime if they did. A lot of people want him off the their for what they call "hate speech."

For every advertiser that leaves, two more will come in to fill their spots. The same reason why people like Jerry Springer, Howard Stern, and other entertainers with extreme material stay in business. Savage has the third largest talk show audience...he entertains well.

People have a habit of watching entertainers like Savage and Stern knowing darn well they are going to be shocked, and then they get upset when these "shock DJs" come through.

It is a lot like a nonsmoker who sits in a smoking section simply to complain about the smoke. If you go to a strip club expect to see breasts. If you listen to an extreme right wing talk show host...then expect to hear some whacky right wing talk show jumbo.

This is the first time I'm commenting here. I saw many holes in Elvis' arguments, that couldn't be ignored:

I think interlard may have meant that Savage was quoted as calling himself a conservative nationalist. Most of his speech can be translated to=Fascism=Hatred=Hate Speech=Progressively being Canned/Fired.

As far as Elvis' analogies are concerned, there are no more smoking sections in many states: Strippers, barmaids, waitresses got sick and tired of getting Breast Cancer and Lung Cancer, so the vote won. Don't Strippers have the right to work in a safe environment? And if the strippers don't deliver what their "contract" says (ie.: showing their breasts, crotch, etc.) don't the pimps, I mean bar owners usually fire them? an employer can fire @ will.

I've never listened to Michael Wiener or the Cleveland radio station that used to play his Hate Speech. I don't listen to "shock DJs", but have most of my life, listened to the independent radio stations that have played the underground music which I love. Those stations/artists are the first ones that came up with the public service announcements: "If you don't like what you hear, turn the knob", many, many years ago. They're a conglomeration of people/artists/and true connoisseurs, only some are "liberals" as you deceptively stated. Years later Geraldo tried to coin the phrase, and look where he "flip-flopped" to (have you checked lately? He's not a liberal, anymore). Furthermore, he's a hypocrite who was whining about Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, who are COMEDIANS, and have a different obligation to the public.

Michael Wiener chose to be a slave (freedom of choice) to the advertisers and radio corporations, and by all means spewed out the "Hate Speech" (Freedom of Speech) that makes him sound like a fifth grader for "ratings". After getting canned (freedom of speech by the public pressuring the radio stations and advertisers) so many times and learning the hard way, he may finally, in his dim-witted mind realize that the ones who he really should have appeased were his constituents, the constituents of his advertisers and therefore, radio stations. . . the ones that basically sign his paycheck. . . THE PUBLIC. Some of us took action. . . so, the vote won. The content IS relevant. That's why we have to play by rules, right? I thought conservatives LOVED rules!

[This is just incessant whining, if he didn't have freedom of speech, such as in a fascist country, Communist Country or Dictatorial regime, he would have been tortured and executed. He got off pretty easy in Mississippi and Cleveland. I think you whine unnecessarily, on his behalf. I think it's funny that you get angry with the "liberals", only a little more than a dozen in Cleveland, and not the "conservatives", who actually fired him.

When it comes to autism, I place so much faith in the mothers and fathers of the children, to know that their child has developed this disease.

I have had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for 10 years, and there is no definitive test for it, either. That doesn't make me less sick or less credible.

Someday there will be definitive tests for autism and CFS but I won't wait in line for any apologies from those who doubted us.
