Last Night's Action: Alone in First

2006_04_smetslogo.jpg

  • Mets 3, Phillies 1: Remember when Oliver Perez and Carlos Delgado both stunk? Ah, those were the days. They won Thursday's matinee against the Phillies almost all by themselves. Perez struck out 12 batters in 7 2/3 innings but he got a no-decision because he had the misfortune of leaving before the Mets took the lead. They did that when Delgado hit a two-run double down the left-field line in the bottom of the eighth. Billy Wagner didn't hiccup in the ninth.

So now the Mets sit all by their lonesome in first place. They still have their problems. Nick Evans and Marlon Anderson (!) are still playing left field. Pedro Martinez hasn't looked good at all. The Phillies and the Marlins don't appear to be going anywhere for now. But the Mets probably have the best team in the division, and, for the first time since April, it is theirs to lose.

M E T S ... METS METS METS!

My National League rooting interests are so torn. On the one hand, I lived in Philly for a while and enjoyed the city. On the other hand, I now live in New York and highly approve of the Anti-Yankees vibe I get from Mets fans (my AL interests are not in question - Go Sox!).

I think I lean slightly more towards rooting for the Mets because their fans hate the Yankees almost as much as Red Sox fans do, and if there's anything I can get behind, it's hating the Yankees.

So, yeh -- I second what pk4l said.

cwbuecheler, is it still possible to sway you towards the Phillies? I grew up just outside of Trenton, NJ, and sports there are fairly deeply divided between Philadelphia sports and NY teams (aided by the fact that the area gets both television markets). As such, that pocket of Phillies fans is also vehemently, vehemently opposed to the Yankees (I'm a girl, and I used to get into 'arguments' on the playground over Phillies/Yankees all the time as a child).

Maybe Pedro "hasn't been looking good" because his dad was fucking dying of cancer?
