Yesterday, elected officials marched and held a rally over reports of police officers drove an unmarked police car with a black doll's head affixed to the antenna. State Senator Bill Perkins said, "We wanted an apology and we were given an excuse. We wanted an investigation and we got ‘It was a prank.' Without both an investigation and public apology for this demeaning, disgusting and racist action, the distrust between the Harlem community and police will worsen.”
On Tuesday, a number of people saw the car with the doll's head on the antenna around Fifth Avenue and 11th Street. One witness said he tried to take a picture of it, but the cops "pull[ed] it off and threw it in trunk and go into restaurant laughing about it." Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said on Wednesday that the car's driver didn't realize the doll's head was there until someone told him, "[He] didn't know it was there and just threw it off the car."
Now Internal Affairs is requesting surveillance video to see if there are any clues about the matter. Yesterday, Kelly continued to defend his officers said, "Is it possible you don't see something on the back of your car? Yes. How often do you look at the back of your car?"

The fake outrage over this non-story is absolutely ridiculous. Chances are some kid put it on the car as a joke. I seriously doubt the officers were playing with dolls.

I always look at the back of my car before I get into it. There could be one of those useless DOT types hanging out around there. That way when I back up over them I can enjoy the crunching sound eve more.

People need to lighten up and let the cops investigate more important things. Stupid morons.
I know someone who's studying to be a cop. Looking in the book that's supposed to help prepare candidates for the written test, I noticed plenty of questions that require prospective cops to notice absolutely everything. You're given a paragraph to read then expected to answer questions about what was where, who did what and all sorts of other things in almost Adrian Monk-like detail. So if cops are supposed to be so attentive, how did they miss a doll's head on their antenna?
Indeed, this antenna (as shown on the news) is about 8'' high and mounted dead center on the back trunk. You are saying these cops drive around without looking in the rear view mirror?
Either the cops involved are indeed total dickheads, or the two guys that saw it are hysterical overreacters who misinterpreted their response. I'd say odds are about 70-30.
How did they miss it? It was dark out and the doll's head merged with the tree shrouded background. Or the dappled street lighting camouflaged the doll's head.
I wasn't there and you weren't there, so how and when the head was mounted can be only be guessed at.
Now how about those poor white dolls being mounted on the front of sanitation trucks, that's a different story. The white's need a representative to tend to their needs. A Remington Chase Sharlton III would be a fine candidate for the job.
