East Village Shooter Described as Schizophrenic

Yesterday morning, two people were shot on Avenue D and East 7th Street. According to the Daily News, "Jesus Ortiz ambushed neighbor Calvin Gibson, 50, a local boutique owner who had stopped to buy coffee at the Jahanara Deli & Grocery." Gibson was shot six times while the store's 18-year-old worker, Mohammed Islam who is a student at NYC College of Technology, was hit twice (Gibson is in stable condition while Islam had the bullets removed and was released). The Sun reports that pedestrians ran for cover during the gunfire, and then Ortiz sped away in a car, only to turn himself in later. Ortiz's brother said he was schizophrenic and another said, "He just flipped out. This is a man that needs some serious medical help."
