Taxi Surcharge Wins Backing of Some Officials
15 city council members (including the ubiquitous John Liu) have thrown their support behind a temporary $1 taxi surcharge. But the Taxi and Limousine Commission and the mayor continue to reject the proposal, with Bloomberg pointing to hybrid taxis as the best solution to skyrocketing gas prices. At a rally yesterday, taxi driver Parvinder Singh told NY1: "This gas price is just killing us – all the drivers and all the 5 percent we're paying to all the brokers, and the companies. And this fuel surcharge we definitely need now. We have it in 30 cities in the U.S. Why not us?"

Good luck fitting all your luggage in a Prius for your trip to the airport. Why do we continue to elect these aristocrats who have no concept of life in this town?

A) Have you even seen a picture of the hybrid cabs they're rolling out? They're mainly small SUVs.
B) I can't speak for anyone else but I take the train to the airport. Paying a cabbie $50 sounds like something an aristocrat would do.
C) And, I mean, wouldn't an aristocrat just say "go ahead, raise prices $1, it doesn't fucking matter to me"?

Why shouldn't the taxi drivers be allowed to charge more? If the cost of gas and other goods go up they should be able to adjust to that. When the price of bread and cheese goes up the price of pizza goes up. I don't see why taxi drivers trying to make a living shouldn't be able to adjust accordingly.

The Ford Escape Hybrid SUV Taxis that are popping up can actually get 32 mpg. That's exceptional for an SUV and still far better than the Crown Vics.

Fenian isn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. Say "hybrid" and everything he knows about them boils down to "Prius."
Hybrids are a good step, although just how much gas they'll save under NYC leadfeet is unknown. Still, Bloomberg should allow the surcharge as a temporary measure until the drivers can get hybrids. Give them a little breathing room but make it short-term just to light a fire under them. Maybe a year or two.

More insults towards other users by spiritof76. :/

I had my first ride in a Prius cab the other day and the driver and I talked about the airport issue. He said he has no problem getting two people with luggage into the car. More than two people though and you might be riding with your bag under your feet. But as others have pointed out there are lots of hybrids. I've seen taxicabs that were hybrid Escapes, Altimas and Camrys as well as Priuses. I've never seen a Civic, maybe they're too small, I don't know.
He also said he spends around 10 bucks a day on gas while some of the other drivers were shelling out 60 bucks or more. And he had over 60K miles without one repair or problem with the car. And of course the engine shuts off totally when the car stops or when it's going slowly in traffic, which benefits the whole city. So hooray for Priuses.

Another useful, content-filled comment from "hoodlum," a very appropriate handle.

You're post has about as much content as my post. :/ What a hypocrite. You call me a troll yet you continue to insult me and other users and name call. Seems trollish to me. Then you criticize me for lack of content by making a post doing very that. You sound like a snob sticking your nose up at other users for not posting whatever you deem to be long content filled posts.

So tell me, what on-topic thoughts exactly have you contributed to this thread? That's what I thought. It's nothing but a long personal attack for you. What's the matter, little boy? Did the big, bad man hurt your feelings? You're an idiot. You don't even know what a troll is. Get used to insults. When all you ever do is spew hatred and foolishness and instantly resort to vulgarities and profanity, there will always be somebody around the corner to cut you down to size. Especially when you're stupid enough to pick a handle like "hoodlum" yet expect people to take you seriously.

I contributed my thoughts on why taxi drivers should be able to adjust their pricing for their service because other goods and services adjust their price as well. You can't seem to make any point without insulting and belittling other users. I know exactly what a troll is.
