Last Night's Action: Maybe Wagner Isn't So Bad

2008_07_pedrofel.jpg

  • Phillies 8, Mets 6: Johan Santana threw eight innings of two-run ball and then turned the game over to the bullpen with a 5-2 lead. No problem, right? Not quite. Duaner Sanchez, Joe Smith and Pedro Feliciano gave up six runs -- the first five of which came before anyone got an out -- and the Mets choked away the opener of a three-game set that will decide first place, at least for the time being. Sandwiched in the ninth-inning disaster was a mental mistake by Jose Reyes. He tried and failed to get a force at second instead of taking the sure out at first. Then the floodgates opened. Next time Mets fans whine about Wagner, they should think about this: At least he gets an out before blowing the game.
  • Yankees 8, Twins 2: Darrell Rasner finally pitched well. Yes, the Twins lineup is not great, but Rasner's recent pitching deserved the same description. Bobby Abreu, who has been impersonating a corpse for much of the season, hit a go-ahead homer in what ended up as the Yankee's sixth straight win. The Yankees are playing better despite missing Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui, but how much longer can that last?

just a comment on the twins lineup: it's not too bad. how many .300 hitters do they have, and they have speed.

rasner did well, which was long overdue. could the bats finally be awake?

i admit i'm somewhat pessimistic when it comes to our sports teams but man, that's a bunch of negativity in that yankee recap. give them some credit.

jose reyes lacks discipline.

Somebody who knows sports needs to start writing these posts; the Twins had 6 players batting over .300 in their line-up last night. Yeah, that line-up is no good.

JP Lynch, what are you talking about? It's almost universally known that the Twins have a bad lineup. Sure, a lot of their hitters have a high average, but it's an empty one. Few walks, little power. The lineup has been succeeding by hitting well in clutch situations, but besides Morenau and perhaps Kubel/Cuddyer, is pretty much comprised of slap-hitters. It's the Twins way - when you have played Jason Tyner at DH for a significant number of at-bats (in the past, sure), that's a sign of what the organization prioritizes.

kswissreject: Twins have scored 490 runs thus far, making them tied for 4th place in runs scored in the Al and there are only two teamsd in the NL that have scored more runs then them. Yeah - they suck.
