Thank You For Being a Friend, Estelle Getty

0807estellegetty.jpgEstelle Getty, born Estelle Scher on the Lower East Side of New York City in 1923, and perhaps best known for her role as Sophia on the Golden Girls, has died. Getty was 84 (she would have been 85 on the 25th) and living in Los Angeles; Bloomberg.com reports that "she had been ill for several years with what doctors eventually diagnosed as Lewy body dementia, a brain disorder that causes cognitive problems as well as the tremors associated with Parkinson's disease." During her early years in New York she attended Seward Park High School, and was a secretary prior to taking the Broadway stage. Reportedly she was "thrilled and content to work in the New York theater and never aspired to television or film until a five-year stint on Broadway in Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song Trilogy raised her profile."

Seward Park High School is that old!?

sad. a very cool lady.

Her role as Sophia really made the show for me! Very funny lady!

Christian Bale must have killed her.

^ Angela Lansbury's on the case!

^ Step aside, Angela. Batman will figure it out.

RIP, she was a funny lady on the Golden Girls. Bea Arthur was the best of them though.

Seward Park HS is that old, and Barbra Streisand also went there.

Not to pick on you Dude, but Barbara attended Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn. She and Neil Diamond were both in the school choir. Not kidding.

My bad, I thought there has to be some famous celeb who went to Seward Park. I knew Babs went to a public HS in NY somewhere.

Here's the famous Alum list in case anyone's interested
