MOVIE: The original high school musical, Fame, screens tonight at the Directors Guild of America. The musical drama follows a group of young talents throughout their four years at a New York performing arts high school. There's even a post-screening discussion featuring costume designer Kristi Zea and composer Michael Gore, who took home an Oscar for his score.
7 p.m. // Directors Guild of America [110 W 57th St] // $5
COMEDY: John Mulaney and Ann Carr join Andres du Bouchet at UCB tonight as he "celebrates his 35 fictional years as a Hollywood icon with fascinating interviews, powerful film clips, titillating stories, and stiff drinks."
8 p.m. // UCB Theater [307 W 26th St] // $5
THEATER: The unlikely Broadway transfer [title of show] is up and running at the Lyceum, and critics like the Times’s Charles Isherwood have been generally enthusiastic about this “hilariously self-referential show” about breaking into show business. The meta musical has to do with a couple of guys trying to come up with a show in time to make the deadline for the New York Musical Theater Festival; most of the dialogue is taken verbatim from their brainstorming conversations. What may sound pedestrian on paper is, according to Julie Congress, “funny, inventive, and – this surprised me – inspirational.” – John Del Signore
8 p.m. // Lyceum Theater [149 West 45th Street] // Ticket prices vary.
MUSIC: The Death Set, Ponytail, Joan of Arc, Mae Shi and the Muggabears fill out the bill at Harket Motel tonight. All bands worth checking out, but if you can only stand being in a likely-to-be non-air conditioned venue for very long...get there early for the Muggabears and just see how long you can sweat it out for.
8 p.m. // Harket Motel [1142 Myrtle at Broadway, Brooklyn] // $8
