- Yankees 2 Oakland 1: On a day when the bats were once again silent, it was Andy Pettitte who led the Yankees to victory. Pettitte made his best start of the season, pitching eight innings, while allowing only one run and striking out nine. A-Rod got things going in the first with a sac-fly, but New York couldn’t add to a 1-0 lead because Justin Duchscherer kept them in check. But, Jason Giambi put one just over the wall in right to give New York a 2-1 lead. Mariano came on to pitch what turned out to be an eventful ninth. Bobby Abreu didn’t catch a routine flyball with a runner on and then almost threw the ball away, but A-Rod made a nice backup play to get the out. Then, Jose Molina threw out an Oakland runner to end the game.
- Mets 7 Cincinnati 5 (10 innings): The Mets kept battling and managed to salvage a split of their series in Cincinnati. Mike Pelfrey had his first shaky start in awhile, surrendering five runs and three homers, but Sanchez and Wagner kept the Reds off the board. New York took advantage of a huge error in the tenth to plate two runs and regain a share of first with a series against Philadelphia starting Tuesday. Unfortunately, not all the news was good as Billy Wagner is having his pitching shoulder examined.
