Burglaries Up in Well-Off Neighborhoods

2008_07_upwards.jpgThe Post looks at the NYPD's recent crime data and notes burglaries have risen up to 25% "in some of the wealthiest neighborhoods." While burglaries have dropped citywide by 8.9%, there has been a 26.8% rise on the Upper East Side, 20.2% in Midtown East (including Murray Hill), 24.5% increase on the Upper West Side, 19.2% in Chelsea and 26.2% in Greenwich Village. Community Board 2 (located in the Village) Chairman Brad Hoylman said, "We've heard from community residents who are concerned that resources are being directed out of the neighborhood...This is not just anecdotal evidence. There's an upswing in crime and we need to organize ourselves."

I told you this would happen with all the layoffs and the upper class kicking out people of their apts so they can make a mini castle. Hey if you are poor chances are so are your neighbors so of course the nicer neighborhoods will be victimized I don't need a chart to tell me that.

On Friday afternoon a plain-clothes policemen asked me if I had heard of any air-conditioner "push-ins" in my building. We did have someone up on the roof about 2 weeks ago, and last year there was an incident where I guy climbed down the fire escape ladder, wearing a full suit mind you, and told a girl in a studio apartment through a window that he was a real estate agent and would it be ok if she let him in so he could show the place. (She's ok - the dude climbed back up the ladder and disappeared. She was so freaked out though that it took her 10 minutes to call someone.) Anyway, the cop said there was a rise in this type of activity and it's all the more enticing to thieves if they can see your laptop or other high-ticket, easy to transport item from the window. He then told me if I did see or hear anything that I should walk around the corner to the 9th precinct on 5th Street and get a police officer to come back with me. Don't call - go over there yourself. I guess they'd be unlikely to pick up the phone if you called...

Don't they remember what Willie Sutton said about why he robbed banks? "Because that's where the money is." Why would you want to rob a house that has nothing when the rich people have the good stuff?
