Last Night's Action: Bizarre Ending

  • Yankees 4, Athletics 3 (12 innings): This see-saw battle ended on a strange play: Jose Molina got hit by a pitch to force in the game-winning run. The Yankees had a 2-0 lead in this one but Jose Veras let it -- and a win for Joba Chamberlain -- get away. Then Mariano Rivera allowed a run in the ninth, and the Yankees appeared dead. But after a caught stealing and a groundout left the Yankees with two outs and no one on in the bottom of the inning, Robinson Cano doubled and Wilson Betemit singled him home. The Yankees knocked on the door after that in the ninth and then in the 10th and the 11th. They finally struck gold in the 12th and have won two straight following the All-Star break.
  • Reds 7, Mets 2: This was not a good game for the Mets, who hit into three double plays and basically saw everything go against them. They blew leads of 1-0 and 2-1. After David Wright's homer in the fourth, not much went right. Oliver Perez walked three in six innings and took the loss by allowing three runs. The bullpen decided to remove all the suspense.
  • Fever 71, Liberty 55: That historic outdoor game didn't go so well for the home team as the New York was trounced by Indiana. Perhaps the Liberty just couldn't adjust to the evening's steamy temps.
  • Red Bulls 2, Galaxy 2: A fabulous goal by Juan Pablo Angel went to waste when Landon Donovan scored an LA equalizer in the 92nd minute. Settling for a draw stinks, New York will tell you.

Most players are only in NYC temporarily.

Exactly my point. Most players play for any team temporarily. So it's silly to be cheering "Go New York" when they're not really New Yorkers and never will be. Just a bunch of hired guns and whether they win or lose means nothing to me.

Most players are only in NYC temporarily. Only a very select few play for one team their entire lives, like Yaz, Brett etc.

More to your point, Beltran, Delgado, Santana etc wear a Mets uniform, and I support Mets baseball no matter where the players come from.

If they're cheaters, abusers, etc I draw the line but that's it.

you don't follow sports? you don't say.

where did you grow up 76?

  • Spirit of 76

Huh. I don't follow sports, but it seems like the Great American Pastime is becoming the Great Pan-American Pastime at least for the Yankees, judging from all the names above. Cano, Cabrera, Molina, Rivera. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it just makes taking these games as seriously as many fans do that much sillier. These guys are no reflection on New York. They weren't born here or raised here. They're just here for the money and the moment someone gives them more to play for another team, the same rabid fans will root against them. Why aren't Gothamist trolls complaining about the sports "transplants," especially since they're only in NYC temporarily?
