Considering how vulnerable the scalp is to sunburn, it's dumb to expose it to intense summer sun. I just wear a Tilley sun hat and the shade it gives keeps me cooler. I notice I don't really feel as hot when I walk out from under a building's shadow since the sun isn't beating on my face and hair. Also, sunburn on the scalp can damage hair follicles. You'd better like being bald now, because you may be setting yourself up for permanent baldness.

I grow my hair longer in the summer, but cut it short in the winter because I hate having hat head.

You know, a few people doing something doesn't make it a trend. I also don't know what is worse. Thy NYTimes covering this or Jen Carlson rewriting it made for a blurb in 17 magazine.
