Giants Release Seat License Price Details
Less than a month ago, the Giants announced they were going to generate revenue by issuing personal seat licenses to season ticket holders. Yesterday, they released the specifics of the plan that will charge $1,000-20,000 per seat. The monies collected will go towards paying debt on the new stadium. And the Giants aren't just selling PSLs, but they're also jacking up the price of the actual ticket too - the most expensive tickets will be $700 at the new stadium versus $115 this coming season. Assuming all the licenses are sold, the Giants will collect about $367 million. The new stadium, which the Giants will share with the Jets, is scheduled to open in 2010. The Jets have yet to reveal their PSL pricing scheme.

Anyone that falls for this crap is a moron. It's amazing how many ways these professional sports teams can find to rip off the fans.

Yeah, the idea that you need to pay for the right to pay for a ticket is pretty greedy.

On the other hand, the people that actually go to the games are the ones paying for the new stadium or much of it anyway. Still, you wouldn't think two teams combined would have much trouble paying for the stadium simply using their future cash flows.

that license thing is the most bullshit thing I've ever heard. When you get a license you must have a pre-requisite for that license. Like to drive you need to take driving courses. The only pre-requisite for a giant seat license is money. It's not like they had to show that they are the most die hard giant fan or something. This is why only bad things happen when your team wins. If the Giants loss last year this would not have happened.

I'm not sure it's a function of winning. Take the Jets for example. They never win and I bet they at least charge some sort of PSL. Maybe not as much, but something.

Easy solution. If the Giants aren't able to build a new stadium then DON'T BUILD IT. It isn't like Giants stadium is in a bad shape to began with.
Sports are a business. Plain and simple. All the owners care about is the profits.

It amazes me that there are any fans of professional sports left at all. The whole institution is so stupid and corrupt.

What is a function of winning is games being switched from 1pm to 8pm to accommodate Sunday Night Football.

I predict more people will get the NFL package with Dish Network (or whatever network offers it) in lieu of getting seats, which will now be snatched up by corporations and the rich.

I'm glad I'm not a sports fanatic.

My friend's family has had four season seats for decades. Their license fee is $15K PER SEAT. They are upper middle class and do well for themselves, but even that is getting to be too much. After being loyal ticket holders for decades, they are thinking of getting rid of them.
That said, you are reimbursed the license fee if you ever give up your seats. So you do see that money back. However, you lose any interest that money might have earned. That's where the Giants make their money on this deal - the interested earned on the license fees.

@Jen Chung - No need for regular people to get NFL Ticket. Games in the local market are virtually guaranteed to be carried on TV.
The Giants know that they have a wait list. If people give up their seats, the team knows there are people to buy the left over seats. Given that, they're just squeezing all the money that they can out of the new stadium.

this should go over well in this shitty economy.

The old stadium was fine.

These teams deserve to play in empty stadiums but you know what would happen: a "full house" would be airbrushed in with CGI by the networks to pimp their broadcasts. There's nothing left, the teams' ties to cities are meaningless, their players and records are meaningless, and their ownership is meaningless. That said, Go Giants!

The tickets are already too expensive. The drive to the Meadowlands blows, getting out of there is a nightmare. I've heard talk of better highway access but I don't buy it.
So now you've basically told people who have supported the team with ticket purchase, parking fees, concessions for years through good and bad, fuck you.
Wellington Mara is turning over in his grave.
Personally I prefer to watch the games on tv anyway but it's a disgrace. This is only the beginning, let's see what the Mets and Yankess have in store for screwing the fans next year. You think the Mets will offer $5 tickets to 10 or 12 games like they have the past few years? Good luck.
