Curbed has been following the saga of the out-of-service escalators at a Union Square subway station entrance and now the escalators are being encased in sheet rock, which is certainly much fancier than the plastic yellow fencing and sign that says "Unauthorized Personnel Not Allowed." In other subway entrance news, the MTA opened two new subway entrances at Columbus Circle--these only have stairs though.

They also encased the frequently out-of-service escalator that connects Ely Avenue to Court Square in LIC. Now the rush hour crowd resembles a cattle herd every morning.
what is the point of these escalators/elevators when they're so frequently not working?
They should fine the hell out of the scum landlords that are supposed to keep the escalators working. The one in Columbus Circle has been out of work for months also...
Mitch Hedberg would not approve.
Right on skowen. Sorry for the convenience.
#3 - yeah! How dare those bastards get away with making us walk up a staircase!
