Body Found at McCarren Park Pool

images.jpgJust in from the newswire, there's a "suspicious death" being reported at McCarren Park Pool, allegedly at the building that serves as an entrance. The person was found "DOA by event staff" earlier this morning. Last night Twelve Ophelias, a play centered around Hamlet's Ophelia coming back to life, was staged there; the night before there was a screening of The Virgin Suicides. All in all, a dark week for McCarren. Thus far, multiple calls to the Precinct have gone unanswered.

UPDATE: ABC is reporting that police are currently trying to identify the badly decomposed body, which was found around 10 a.m. today after parks workers told police of "a foul odor coming from a shed at the pool for months." Reportedly they found the body (age, sex and race currently unknown) while retrieving equipment from the shed. It's uncertain how long the body has been decomposing for.

I'm confused. Why should people from Ohio go back to Kansas?

  • tsol

Won't somebody please think of the CHILDREN?

  • daacres

maybe this person was killed by one of the machete wielding teenagers?

brooklynbs had it right. the folks who the parks dept. hires probably couldn't care less about a mysterious smell and avoided it. if it was stinkin' it might have been there a bit (YES! AT THE BREEDERS SHOW!!!!), which only adds to the weirdness.

gothamist has way too many trolls from ohio. fuck y'all and go back to kansas if you don't like finding old bodies. this is NY!!!

"And people wonder why society seems to have gone to hell in a handbasket."

Yes, because people taking glee in the death of others is a completely new thing.

  • Spirit of 76

The low level of empathy in these comments toward the unidentified deceased is nothing. The same people never care whenever anybody dies. If it was an accident, they gleefully say it's worth a Darwin Award. If it was a crime like Nicole Dufresne, they say she was stupid hick and had it coming. Some loons here were positively giddy when Tony Snow died. And people wonder why society seems to have gone to hell in a handbasket.

Hey they is a foul smell coming from that shed, lets wait 'months' to look into what it is.

"It's uncertain how long the body has been decomposing for"

This is indeed pertinent information that needs to be found out at once. How long has this dead body been stinking for??? Never mind when he died, the goal here is to maintain that springtime freshness on all the dead bodies we find.

you mean homeless people. aka the unseen.

My guess is it's one of the many, many very drunk men that wander around these parts each and every day. :[ We had one living in the empty lot behind our house for almost a year. They bulldozed the site (for the third time) only yesterday. He had people coming in and out of that lot every day, getting blasted drunk and sometimes ranting and raving at the local skater kids.

There are just so many of these men wandering around. They find wherever they can and just fall down. It's like something out of a Cormac McCarthy novel.

Maybe this will convince the Renegade Craft people to move the Fair out of the blazing hot crock-pot that is the McCarren Park Pool and back into the park.

I wonder if we will ever hear about this death/murder whatever in a reputable media outlet. It's really disturbing that the guy that was shot and killed at the Marcy/Broadway bus terminal last weekend, got NO coverage whatsoever. What's up with that?

If you really want to see something ugly, click on your favorite troll commenter's name and look at their comment history. It's amazing how much energy they spend contributing so little.

Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, all the same to me.

As others have pointed out, the pool is in the 94th Precinct.

The Parks worker who generally do the clean-up of the pool after events are low-level criminals doing community service, work detail or some other form of restitution. You know, hoes and junkies. Not a surprise that they didn't bother to check on the smell.

  • WorksInDUMBO

uh, "Cuntry" (even your name implies that you are a jackass)--why do you even bother coming to Gothamist if you obviously have such disdain for the site?

So you say hope it was a "hipster from Ohio" who died? I hope it was a foul message-board troll.

  • cwbuecheler

    Umm...someone died.

Anyone up for anything other then sarcasm towards Gothamist/the Police Precinct?

I came in here with a snarky quote in mind when the post first went up and then decided against it for that exact reason. Course, there's really not much more to be said at this point, because no one knows wtf happened to the person in question.
