NYC Cable License for Verizon's FIOS

2008_07_fios.jpgOoh: Silicon Alley Insider brings word that Verizon just got approval from the NY State Public Service Commission to bring FIOS to NYC. Apparently FIOS TV will launch TV service in the "coming weeks," as "it's already been taking orders in launch neighborhoods." When it was first announced the cable TV-phone-Internet option was coming to town in April, the city said, "This is a historic agreement that when approved for the first time will bring true cable television service competition in each in every home in all five boroughs of New York." It's hoped that FIOS will be available to 30% of NYers by the end of the year.

Could this mean the end for Time Warner's evil and incredibly incompetent monopoly (RCN doesn't count b/c its coverage is limited)? I'm eager to check out FIOS, even though Verizon doesn't like puppies.

I've never had a problem with Time Warner except for the cost. Hopefully they'll be forced to lower their rates.

I want FIOS internet access so I can slap snarky comments up on Gothamist even faster than before.

OMG! OMG! I've been waiting with baited breath for FIOS ever since I saw how fast my friend's connection is on Long Island. Even the HDTV is better cause they have a higher bandwidth. If you watch fox and Abc on Time Warner the HDTV signal is 720p but on Verizon Fios it's 1080i with a much clearer signal and not as many artifacts. I'm hoping Time Warner gets competitive and starts slashing prices or I'm out the door. Can you believe I live in Tribeca and Whole foods doesn't deliver to me and I don't Get FIOS yet? unfuckingbelievable!

I guess it'll take a looooong while until it's available in Inwood... sigh...

All I want is the NFL football package... (and thats still DirecTV - damn landlord wont allow me to put a dish onto the building...

but I would dump time warner for because I want FIOS internet access!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do I need to get a land phone line to get the cable and internet? Because I really have no need for that part of the package.

There could not possibly be a cable company that is worse than Cablevision.

You could get "naked internet" from Verizon: Broadband internet service for VOIP (like Vonage, ect) without their phone service.
However, they are not going to advertise it nor make it easy to get.
