Gothamist Cynic - Probably because there is no real reason to spend money to put up LED displays when paper works fine. While the price of gas is high, the service stations aren't exactly rolling in the dough.

I am sure they will get plenty of sympathy from motorists in such tragic situation. The gas stations should tag on a surcharge on the gas for replacing the numbers.
