A sad but natural phenomenon is occurring at some gas stations: They are running out of plastic numbers to display gas prices--specifically, the number 4, thanks to the budget-busting high gas prices. One station manager told the Times he's still waiting for his 4's to come in (that's why he's handwritten them), not to mention the 5's for the diesel pump. The city's Department of Consumer Affairs and State Department of Agriculture and Markets say the handwritten or photocopied numbers are okay, as they understand the marketplace has been changing very quickly.

"Can you believe this? They give you five Q's and only two U's. What a world!"
- Reverend Lovejoy
why don't they just use LED displays?
Better order your 6's and 7's now!
Call Sesame Street.
I am sure they will get plenty of sympathy from motorists in such tragic situation. The gas stations should tag on a surcharge on the gas for replacing the numbers.
Gothamist Cynic - Probably because there is no real reason to spend money to put up LED displays when paper works fine. While the price of gas is high, the service stations aren't exactly rolling in the dough.
Not enough '4's? We are officially a third world country.
#7 that very fact of reality has not hit the sheeple masses yet, they have to be literally be hit with stick for them to wake up.
Sadly, by the time they do so, it would have been too late.
