Senator Charles Schumer believes that the oil bills for winter home heating will come as a shock to homeowners. Newsday reports that, based on his office's estimates, Long Island homeowners will have to bear a $966 increase while NYC residents will see a $720 jump. Schumer is working on a bill to help out low income families help cover the bills. The senior Senator from NY also defended his comments on IndyMac, disagreeing with regulators who think his discouraging remarks caused a run on the bank.

In other countries that have high home heating costs, they make more of an effort to heat only a small part of their homes instead of the entire house. That is a model we should move toward as home heating costs will continue to rise. Better insulation + more efficient heating units wouldn't hurt either.

i have always wondered about being able to hook up all the nyc gym stationary bikes, step machines, nordic skis (dunno if anyone still does those), etc., etc. to a generator.......
with new york's huge gym population and their insatiable hunger for fitness, that should create plenty of energy!
