lanciano my memory isn't what it used to be, too much funny stuff smoked in my hockey playing youth. I realized after I wrote it that it was top floor. Yes I used to play pick up games Sunday 2am -4am.

that was a quick turnaround, bornbrednyer. Indeeed, Sky Rink at 450 w 33rd street was on the 16th floor of a 16 story building which qualifies it for top floor status. I remember they had open hockey there at around 2am. We always wanted to stay to watch our friends but my mom was not into the idea of my sis and I spending the night there.

Correction Sky Rink was on the top floor. I used to play pick up hockey games at ridiculous hours there in the mid 70's to early 80's.

Sky Rink on 33rd st was not on the top floor so it doesn't qualify as rooftop. The Parks dept runs indoor rinks at Coney Island and one on Staten Island besides the Queens rink.

For some reason, the rink's website is blocked here at work so I can't tell if that "first rooftop ice rink" statement is Gothamist's or the rink's. I am glad that a new rink is opening up in LIC, but I sincerely hope that they're not billing themselves as the first rooftop rink in NYC. If so, they need to rewrite their press release.

This closed in the early 90s and Chelsea Piers opened up. I miss the old Sky Rink, it was grungy, unfashionably painted a hideous blue, and stunk of hockey just like a skating rink should. The rink at Chelsea Piers is a poor, overpriced replacement.

Interesting. I wonder how the prices would compare to the city owned rinks, which are under $10 to get in. I think that the only indoor rink run by the Parks Department is also in Queens, the Worlds Fair Ice Skating Rink in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
