A developer will break ground Thursday on what will be the city’s only rooftop ice rink (the Chelsea Piers Sky Rink is on the second floor, not the roof, and it’s been a while since skaters frolicked on the old Madison Square Garden roof rink.)
Located in Long Island City, the City Ice Pavilion will feature an NHL size ice rink that will be open during the winter under a Yeadon air dome, the self-proclaimed “industry leader in air supported structures.” That's right, nothing but the best for LIC.
Rod Gilbert, all-time leading scorer for The New York Rangers, will be on hand for this week’s groundbreaking, which is really more of a roof-breaking, since the building under the rink (located on 32nd Place) is already in existence and boasts a Sleepy’s Mattress Professionals store. Once opened, there’ll be free skating for community groups, figure skating, lessons, youth hockey and a “gourmet” coffee bar.

Interesting. I wonder how the prices would compare to the city owned rinks, which are under $10 to get in. I think that the only indoor rink run by the Parks Department is also in Queens, the Worlds Fair Ice Skating Rink in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
>>the city’s first rooftop ice rink
Actually, this isn't true, the original Sky Rink was at 450 W 33rd street and the 16th floor, much closer to the sky than these other rinks. This closed in the early 90s and Chelsea Piers opened up.
I miss the old Sky Rink, it was grungy, unfashionably painted a hideous blue, and stunk of hockey just like a skating rink should. The rink at Chelsea Piers is a poor, overpriced replacement.
#32(lanciano) I concur. It's also obvious that the Gothamist is being run by these yunnie transplants who know nothing about NYC, yet feel entitled to be an expert on NYC.
i know, gothamist is like, "this is OUR city, let's live it up and love this wonderful culture".
ugh. go away.
For some reason, the rink's website is blocked here at work so I can't tell if that "first rooftop ice rink" statement is Gothamist's or the rink's.
I am glad that a new rink is opening up in LIC, but I sincerely hope that they're not billing themselves as the first rooftop rink in NYC. If so, they need to rewrite their press release.
Coney Island has an Indoor rink. unless the city got rid of it.
damn *yunnies*
Cue the Trinitarios video on YouTube for this one...
Sky Rink on 33rd st was not on the top floor so it doesn't qualify as rooftop. The Parks dept runs indoor rinks at Coney Island and one on Staten Island besides the Queens rink.
Correction Sky Rink was on the top floor. I used to play pick up hockey games at ridiculous hours there in the mid 70's to early 80's.
that was a quick turnaround, bornbrednyer.
Indeeed, Sky Rink at 450 w 33rd street was on the 16th floor of a 16 story building which qualifies it for top floor status.
I remember they had open hockey there at around 2am. We always wanted to stay to watch our friends but my mom was not into the idea of my sis and I spending the night there.
lanciano my memory isn't what it used to be, too much funny stuff smoked in my hockey playing youth. I realized after I wrote it that it was top floor. Yes I used to play pick up games Sunday 2am -4am.
