PHOTOGRAPHY: Sylvia Plachy was the first photographer assigned to shoot the opening photograph of the Goings On About Town section of The New Yorker. Plachy will be on hand tonight to discuss the images in her book, Goings On About Town: Photographs for The New Yorker. The book "brings together a collection of these delightful and enchanting photographs for the first time. Tonight they play Prospect Park’s Long Meadow Ballfields with a program including Mozart's Divertimento in D major, K.125a; Beethoven's Symphony No. 4; and Sibelius' Finlandia. THEATER: Brace yourself: Starting tonight and continuing for the next three weeks, the Midtown International Theater Festival [MITF] will unleash 50 productions on the playgoing public. That makes this the second-largest summer play festival in town after the Fringe; not exactly a lightweight. Tonight there's Penang, which "tells the powerful, absorbing, and deeply moving story of two young men in combat as they confront the forces that are shattering their lives and ideals. Together they struggle to find the humanity that war is taking from them, and discover that love between men in combat can be stronger than any other form of love."
