Pedicabs Still Rolling Without Regulation

It’s been over a year since the City Council passed a bill regulating pedicabs, but police have been unable to enforce the laws because of a lawsuit brought by the New York City Pedicab Owners' Association, which is just one of several pedicab organizations in the city. Consumer Affairs Commissioner Jonathan Mintz tells the Post that the group is trying to claim all the 325 available pedicab licenses for themselves. But Chris Marlow, a flack for the association, insisits that rival pedicab drivers “who are not members of our organization don't have seat belts, don't have insurance, they don't have headlights and tail light.” Can’t they just compete for permits with a chariot race like the old days?

If Chinese or Indians were peddling these things, cries of 'racism' would resound.

Does everything in this city have to be regulated?? The group whining the loudest about the pedicabs are vehicular cab drivers! And its coming mostly from the ones that drive like crap. Driving too fast, blowing through stoplights etc.

If the city council is truly pro-environment and wants to become more "green" you'd think they sponsor the hell out of the pedicabs and decrease the amount cabs and cars on the roads. The pedicabs just dont have the lobby that the TLC has

I am always amazed when I see people put their children in those things. Talk about stupid. Pedicabs should be banned altogether.

Maybe the problem isn't the pedicabs, but that so many idiots try to drive through Midtown during rush hour.

  • smh

hate these things. all they do is block up traffic during rush hour. ever try to drive down 5th Avenue through Midtown? pedicabs are all over the place, blocking up the lanes.

It'll probably take a death or an accident, which will involve a pedicab before they are regulated. NYC is notorious for closing the barn door after the cows have gotten out.
