If the guy really didn't realize that he was marrying such a gold digger then I do feel bad for him. He works his ass off to keep an ungrateful bitch rolling in belts and handbags, then when he gets laid off she ditches him and takes half his shit and gets vaginamony to "maintain her lifestyle" for the indefinite future (until she finds some other rich sucker). Meanwhile, he's ordering in pizza at his new one-bedroom condo somewhere while she's living in his old house, brainwashing his children to hate him and having sleezy guys over to sleep with her in his old bed. Pretty soon his kids are calling her new victim Daddy while he's taking pottery classes trying to meet the down to earth girl who reminds him of his first high school love. See, it sucks to have money.

Here's another way to look at it: The relationships were going down hill for a while and it's now a good time to get out. Since stocks are down, overall wealth is lower and that means poorer spouse gets less in the split. Maybe it's the richer parties that are deciding to call it off.

Huh...I almost had a knee-jerk reaction to Snoopy's comment and was about to call sexism, but I've actually experienced this twice before in relationships. It is an interesting double-standard. Anyway, I think the guy in the story, while heartbroken, at least found this out before being 30 years down the road with the only terminus to this malfunctioning relationship being a lonely death or domestic bickering. Some things are 'blessings' (in the most unreligious sense possible) in disguise.

Ugly investment bankers marry pretty gold digging trophy wife's who marry them for the loot and prestige. Investment banker loses money and prestige and Gold digging ho just gets old and ugly through passage of time and abuse of cocaine = recipe for Marriage disaster. They both lost what they got them into the relationship in the first place. Thanks to the no-fault divorce law it then becomes a public farce. VERY ENTERTAINING to the rest of us though.

Okay, I feel a little bad for the couple in the beginning of the story. Guy marries his high school sweetheart, 20 years later she refuses to scale back when he loses his job, then cheats on him, then files for divorce. I mean, tiny violin and all that for the majority of people affected, but what happened to that guy sucks.
