The day 1 frenzy over the new iPhone 3G has extended into this sunny Saturday: People were dutifully waiting outside an AT&T store near Astor Place at 7:45 a.m. There have been mixed results with people activating their new iPhones--while some have been successful, others are getting error messages, forcing them into iPocalyptic hysteria.

I thought we were in a recession. Who are these early adopters that have this disposable income.

We're not officially in a recession and $200-300 plus $70 in monthly fees isn't exactly a bank breaker for a huge portion of the population.

I think there are enough people in New York city who can afford a $200 cell phone.

Especially since almost everybody already has a cell phone. If they're already paying $50+ per month for a voice plan, a little bit more doesn't hurt.

Me and my friend were walking past the line and my friend asked "what are they waiting in line for?" and I replied "free dildos". That was awesome.

And your friend actually laughed? Must be a great friend to try to make you feel good. Or maybe a terrible friend who didn't have the guts to tell you you're not funny. I don't think even 6th graders would laugh at that.

i thought it was funny. but i'm in 7th grade.

I just walked by the Apple Store on 59th Street and there was still a line--this was at 11:10 pm.

I'm the 7th person in line in this picture.

Worth it.
