Former White House Press Secretary Tony Snow Dies

2008_07_tonysnow.jpgTony Snow, the journalist who served as the third White House Press Secretary in 2006-2007, died early this morning. The 53-year-old had been battling colon cancer. Snow had been a newspaper columnist, a speechwriter for the first President Bush and an anchor Fox News Sunday, and in spite of criticizing George W. Bush in a column, he was asked to replace press secretary Scott McClellan. President and Mrs. Bush issued a statement, "It was a joy to watch Tony at the podium each day. He brought wit, grace, and a great love of country to his work. His colleagues will cherish memories of his energetic personality and relentless good humor," and noted "his brave struggle against cancer."

it sucks when anyone dies from cancer, but this guy was a dick. video

hmmm.... dies of cancer just as another former press secretary scott mcclellen dishes on Bush. Conspiracy? did Karl Rove kill him so he wouldn't corroborate what McClellens says? They probably used the good old microwaves from a satellite in space trick. That's the one where they fry you discretely with very small bits of microwave targeted on you until you get cancer. You'll notice that a lot of Bush's enemy's have died of cancer.

Sad to see him go. RIP Tony. :(

Sad. I may not have liked his politics, but I really hoped he'd beat it. I didn't expect him to, but I hoped.

Y'know, when he was corrupting democracy with lies and defending possibly the worst president of the last 100 years, we all really wished he die of something painful.

Anyone who cheers and celebrates the death of someone else seriously needs professional help. Sometimes the death is deserved, like the would-be robber who got killed with his own gun the other day, but there's a difference between taking grim satisfaction in poetic justice and being gleeful when someone you disagreed with dies. Why is Gothamist so full of these sociopaths? Does anonymity really so easily bring out the worst in NYers, or are they just trolls who post these hateful comments because they know there will be no consequences?

Tim Russert, George Carlin, .....hmmm

you mean like the dufresne posts?
or any other crime committed by a person of color?
yes, where do these people come from? indeed.
oh, where's Al Sharpton?

Snow was an interesting Press Sect.. I respected him for one reason, he came from Faux News so you at least knew he was there to be the professional BS'er. And he was good at it. Which made his battles interesting... he could argue the sun was cold. And after Ari who just lied bold face, Snow just had that prep boy smirk that said look I know its BS but i'm your salesman, so how many do you want to order.

My thoughts to his family.

Hey interlard, I hope you die of something really painful you little shit.

@spiritof76

If this were 1945, you'd be mourning the death of Goebbels. Anyone who willfully chooses to work in the Bush administration, and particularly to defend their Iraq policies, is obviously twisted. And someone a Bush propagandist like Tony Snow causes way more harm to the people on the planet than some punk with a gun.

Get a clue. Or a brain. Or both. This isn't an either/or proposition. Just because I don't take joy in someone's passing doesn't mean I'm crying in my soup. Read my post again, moron. Notice the part where I wrote, "Sometimes the death is deserved... but there's a difference between taking grim satisfaction in poetic justice and being gleeful when someone you disagreed with dies."

This is over. "sweatyelectric" has brought up the Nazis and therefore has Godwinned this thread. As bad as Bush and his brood is, comparing them with Nazis shows a stunningly lax grip on reality.

you gotta give him credit, he died still an a-hole,
unrepentant. who's going to pay for the expensive treatments? they are expensive, if you have to ask, you can't afford it.
wait, let me whip out my checkbook, how much is it?

It's chilling how quickly this man went downhill. Laugh at cancer all you will, but picture this guy struggling against such a pernicious killer that he literally shrivelled before our eyes.

As to those troll comments, I remember Tony Snow as a much more congenial and gentler communicator than his predecessor. Sure, he was representing a hopelessly flawed president and administration but he often seemed clued into this and in many of his press conferences, visibly struggled to lay out the usual Bush B.S.
Cancer aside, he probably left because it became just too much to deal with.
