Arrest Made in Killing of Rockaway Teen

Police believed that 17-year-old Karon Lenihan shot another teen over a long-held grudge. Patrick Hernandez, a Far Rockaway High graduate who was headed to SUNY Cortland, had been walking back from cleaning up a local beach on Thursday morning when Lenihan allegedly jumped out of a car and shot Hernandez in the chest. While the nature of Lenihan's grudge against Hernandez is unclear, the victim's grandmother raged to the Daily News, "I'd like to kill [Lenihan] my goddamn self...My heart is destroyed. You want to fight him? Fight him fist by fist. Be a man."

That's just the point: a 17 year old is not a man. that's why the stupid "grudge", and that's why the ensuing altercation. He probably thought he was being a "man" because of the cartoon version of manhood pedalled to dumb boys these days. Here's a stab in the dark: the killer probably had no father in his life.

How about we encourage inner city youth not to fight at all instead of getting in brawls that escalate into gunfights? The grandmother's message that it's "manly" to break the law by getting into fistfights over silly bullshit is exactly the problem.

Where's JacqueMehoff and his "Pb is cheap" mantra now? A smart kid with a promising future who helped his community is killed by a drug addict lowlife. Surely this wouldn't have happened if everybody was armed, right? Should have been a shooting gallery with everybody on the street opening up on the shooter, lead filling the air like some movie version of 1920s Chicago? Nobody would ever worry about somebody getting the drop on him or having to pull out his own gun every time somebody else made any kind of sudden move, right?
