Con Ed's Shocking Price Hike Here in Time for Summer

071108hotcat.jpgPhoto courtesy Occipital Lobe.

Those high natural gas and oil prices have raised the prices for wholesale electricity that Con Ed buys from power-generating companies, and naturally the company is passing those expenses along to us. The company says that residential customers will pay 22% more for electricity this year than they did last summer – almost a quarter of that spike is due to a Bloomberg-approved rate hike.

Harlem flea market vendor Cruz Reyes, told the Daily News the prices are forcing her to live without air conditioning this summer. But aside from that brief June heat wave, the temperature’s been mercifully tolerable. Come August Reyes’s cheapest option may be to unfold a chair outside the open doors of H&M and enjoy the frosty blast out on the sidewalk.

I wish I had an ice box where I could splay out like that.

I plz can haz cold tummeh?

How is this at all shocking?

Bloomberg sucks.

The temps weren't bad, but the humidity as been awful until the relief yesterday and today.

if I'd still haz my nutz, theid be chilli now.

so... yknow how Con Ed has that deal that for a little bit extra charge you can have a portion of your power come from wind and hydro power rather than oil or gas?
If you've got that deal going for you, are you facing less of a percentage of increase?

Oh, suck it up. Don't blame Con Ed or Bloomberg. Similar rate hikes are happening all over the country. Con Ed can't be expected to eat higher fuel costs for your benefit. If you want to know who's to blame, look around then look in the mirror. We had the chance to avoid all this over 30 years ago. Renewable energy (then called "alternative energy") development was in high gear. But as soon as gas prices went down, research was put on the back burner or even taken completely off the stove. The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves.

I knew a portable generator would come in handy one of these days. I'll just siphon gas from all the cars parked outside. (that's a hint for carowners to get indoor parking)
and a big F U to bloomberg. 22 percent hike is criminal.

That's one of the stupidest statements you've made, and you've made quite a few. "Criminal?" Really? Then call Andrew Cuomo. There are cities facing close to 30% hikes, so quit your whining. And maybe when you're siphoning gas, one of the owners will take a shot at you, since Pb is still cheap.

of course, it's stupid.
do you really think I even have half a brain, I'm on here almost 24/7.
who's whining? I said I be makin me own energy or electrons you big dummy.
and, 22 percent increase is criminal.
thankfully Pb is still cheap and available, not in NYC but in the Free States, wait did I write that?
oh, guns are illegal in NYC, sir. I hope the trying to shoot me has a permit.

it appears I'm incorrect,
you apparently have even more free time to post,
your ranking is number 2. (climbing the charts with a bullet)
