As if the graffiti and anti-hipster sentiments weren't enough to prove that Staten Island may indeed be Williamsburg II, the borough is raising the bar by opening up NYC's first ever tattoo museum! How hip is that? It's set to open this summer in a space above one-named local Dozer's Island Tattoo shop. The SI Advance notes that the plan is "to create three tableaux in the 500-square foot space, with automated mannequins depicting tattooing methods. Video and sound elements will add explanation and atmosphere to each scene." Other relics and photographs of the hundreds of firefighters who came in for their official commemorative WTC tattoos will also be on display. As a nice side note: All money from each of those tattoos has been given to firefighters and their families. Dozer is sure to be the main attraction of the museum, however, along with his 6-year-old son, who the paper claims is "an aspiring gynecologist."

stop saying Williamsburg II. WTf.
"his 6-year-old son, who the paper claims is 'an aspiring gynecologist.' "
Ok, that's just creepy.
Please stop posting about how hip SI is. Have you even been there--like, more than five feet off the ferry been there? Then again, it seems as though you might actually live there and are trying to reassure yourself that it's okay. It's not. Trust me.
Jen are you a fucking embedded correspondent from there or something? I'm going to vomit from the unrelenting coverage of Staten Island stupidity.
I really don't want to be a typical pissed off commenter but this is getting frustrating.
And to the person that says don't click, go fuck yourself preemptively.
I think Jen's doing fine with these.
I don't really get the hate on this one. Certainly not the "frustration."
This is a story about a Tattoo museum opening in one of the 5 boroughs. It's sort-of-but-not-really artsy, mildly edgy, and appeals to New Yorkers who consider themselves to be free-thinkers without ever having to actually challenge themselves.
How is this not a completely Gothamist-type of subject?
Whether or not Staten Island:
a) sucks
or
b) is more like NJ than NYC
is kind of irrelevant. (For the record, I think both are true.)
Staten Island has entered a huge economic panic lately and the city is really pushing to make something worthwhile out of the Armani-laced hellhole. That's why there's so much media coverage all of a sudden. The Gothamist is just following suit.
How is this so different from their intense coverage given to the soon-to-be lost battles to save Coney Island and Union Square Park?
If this was opening in Brooklyn or Queens you guys wouldn't complain about such a minor, quick story.
"UGH MORE FUCKING STARVING MERMAIDS!? WHAT THE FUCK JEN!?"
It's an NYC borough. It's a mildly fun story. The Gothamist wrote a paragraph on it. Lighten up.
This is a fun, quality feature/slice of life story. Fuggedaboutthehaters. Keep on doin the good work Jen.
And "aspiring gynecologist"? WTF?
I'm willing to bet that tomorrow the SI Advance will print a correction: the 6-year-old is an aspiring geologist, not an aspiring gynecologist. Oops, our bad.
i hope mr. cool ice is part of their permanent collection. i would get bored if it's just nothing but tramp stamps.
When I was six, alls I wanted to be was a mammographer. Smart kid.
hey to all those who comment on this...island tattoo is an amazing shop, dozer is a great man, funn as all hell..and his son matthew really does wanna be a gynecologist, his uncle (dozers brother) is a gynecologist and thats what made him want to be one....and as for saten island being "hip" ummm no not at all...this place sucks. the only things to do here are illegal, or you have done it 1000 times already..or you have done it and its illegal. there is nothing here but pool halls, bowling alleys and parking lots. I am very proud to take part in Island Tattoo's museum and so far, its looking amazing and it will be opening soon.
